Dont look good

Just been changing my oil pump and come across this



I`m no expert but it doesnt look good.What is it and what does it mean i`ve got to do?

Picture isnt very good.. Sprocket looks damaged though, the plastic is just a cushion for the chain, if the chain is worn badly it will cut into the plastic deep.
Many miles on the engine?

Not the best of pics is it,the best out of all the ones i took.Not easy to get a good pic when swinging on a hoist in a dingey garage
I assume you mean by damage the brown marks.Its oil.

The chain was a bit slack which made me look up inside.

The oil pump sprocket has the same markings on the teeth as the other sprocket.

The bright silver parts are where the chain runs, it looks quite worn to me, I was referring to the black plastic sides of the main crank sprocket in the second picture, you can see it better on this pic



Looks like the plastic is coming away on yours?

Ye,the plastic collars are cabbaged and as you say are coming away.
Doesnt look a cheap part and decent strip down to get at them
Change both chains is probably in order as well?

Not looking like this lump will be going in end of the month

Gutted, where did you get the engine from?

Sometimes makes you wonder why these engines ended up out of the original car in the first place...

hmm,the car was mine.
It pulled well,the sport button was my favorite switch but not long before i fragged it it developed a small rattle i "assumed" it was the oil pump.

To change the main chain guide is a head off job. Not much point changing the other parts and leaving this on...

Not sure which one is the main chain guide,is it any of these?

Also any ideas on how to the lock the crank now that i`ve got an M20 fly on?

Looks like i`m going to have to make an engine stand aswell cant really do all this on a crane can i

You cant, just use the timing mark on the front pulley.
