Nice :D

Ive got a big rubber mallet that fits lollipops/bushes back onto wishbones winkeye

Just wire brush the arches out by hand, any flakey bits that might be there will come off and you will be able to get the waxoil to soak in properly

Top tip for wish bone bushes.

Tyre soap, they virtually slide on with that and the tyre soap dries out soon after which is what you want.

Nice progress being made with this chariot. Once all the new suspension and gear linkage parts are all fitted it will transform the way it drives.

Bit more progress today :

Propshaft guibo replaced
Propshaft back on
Heatshields back on
Front exhaust bracket back on

Image
As fitted by BMW in Germany Jan '88

Image

On the left as fitted by Rob in Cannock June 2011 :D

Something very satisfying about removing bits that are quite obviously fooked and replacing them with top quality new stuff

Quick update

Prop, Gearbox mounts, Heatshields and exhaust all back on and bolted up but I can't start it to check the exhaust for leaks because the battery is dead. New one here hopefully this week.

Decided today as I can't start it to move it and turn it round in the garage which I need to do to get at the passenger side front strut, thought I'd have a go at the Rotten filler neck

Image
What greeted me when I removed the splashguard - that grey lump in the middle of the pic is a solid piece of mud

Managed to remove the filler neck which was fiddly but not too difficult - every nut came undone apart from the important one that holds the neck in place so just ground the fooker off

Image

Apart from this hole :x the rest of the arch is solid. Should be a 5 minute fix for my welder mate once I remove the trim from the other side.

Image
No wonder I could smell fuel

Image

Image
The turds a nother couple of Kilos lighter now anyway :D

Image
Can't get the bolt out and my drills are all cack so gonna get my mate to chop it when he welds up the hole and just weld a piece with a hole in it to the existing bracket so I can bolt the neck up with a nut and bolt.

Once that hole is welded up and I've got a new battery on it I'm gonna get it on the road, drop the filler neck out of the way whilst leaving all the pipes connected and get the jetwash in there and properly waxoyl it before it all goes back together permanently.

Also need to wire brush and smoothrite the cover for the breather pipes as its crusty but still in one piece

Getting there slowly

:D

"And this is the bar and the pin/clip with the new bush next to it - cut the end off the old bush with a stanley knife and it pushes out - new bush pressed in using nut/bolt/washers as a "puller" and plenty of washing up liquid as lube"

Just browsing this and noticed the comment above, a quick tip is to be careful with washing up liquid, most brands contain loads of SALT!!! The effect on all metals especially "Ally" is obvious. Much better to visit your local plumbers merchant and get some silicone grease as used on plastic push fit joints.

At the last count I'd spent well over £2k including the purchase price

In terms of brand new parts I still need to buy :

Front to rear fuel pipes
Rear light seals
Clutch slave & master cylinders & Braided hose

In terms of secondhand bits I need :

rust free tailgate

In terms of bodyworks repairs :

Removal of front jacking points & make good
Repairs to rear valance both sides
Weld up small hole in drivers side rear arch

In terms of major mechanical expense In the autumn im in for :

Headgasket set & bolts
Pressure test
Replacement head if any issues are uncovered
If not will need new valve stem seals, oil seals etc and manifold studs both sides
Manifold re-face to ensure its flat

Then next Year will be attending to the paint. Or should I say Matt will be when I ask him 8)

I reckon I'll be in for well over £6k by the time its all done 8O

Then the 10mm bolt which holds the fuel filler to the inner arch. This bracket grots. Get the side trim off to look from the inside also.
Done a bit more prodding today - disappointed to find another little hole here but it wasn't unexpected.

Am away on hol for a couple of weeks from tomorrow but gonna push on with this as soon as I get back - got a mate lined up to do the welding - just got to get the N/S/F suspension rebuilt and a 4 wheel alignment done and I can get it over to him :)

60 plate focus diesel? Sh!t man its ok to say think about how good your e30 will be... I think he will top himself if he thought about the 'pleasures' of a focus diesel!! The lag on them duratorq bullsh t lumps is incredible! Atleast say focus rs - ken block spec'd and ready for all the torture your right foot and arms can chuck at it! Then he might come home in a seat rather than a body bag!

Don't let us two plebs ruin your holiday mate

Just picked up a new battery from ECP and fired up el-turdo for the first time in about 2 months.

Started instantly - and immediately noticed how fookin awesome it sounds with the new 'zaust fitted - first time I have ever fitted a full system on my own ( Axle stands - none of this 4 post lift gayness :chuckle: ) and it appears to have sealed right first time too

Reversing lights now working too - have just backed it out of the garage, turned it round and backed it back in so I can now get at the n/s/f corner - gonna try and get the strut and wishbone off tonight and the ARB bush swapped over.

Hoping to get it drivable over the next week or so so I can get it to my welder-mate for the minor patch repairs and then actually use it a bit with what summer we've got left

Might get to Gaydon if all goes to plan - sorry Jim but the german show is too far - any further south and it would be under water :snigger:

Unfortunately most of the stuff I've done so far is underneath :o: The proof is in the driving

Bit more progress last night.

Managed to get the front strut off the car although the wishbone took some persuasion to come away from the subframe

Bit more bodgery by previous "mechanics" found

Image
Image
Why bother fitting the correct pad wear sensor when you can fit one which should be on the back and then just cable tie it out of the way ? :banghead: . 'Tards

Image
Fooked ARB bush

Pulled the arch liner out and removed the mud behind - pretty solid.
Image
Not sure about this - the area round the jacking point appears to be covered in a thick plastic-like ( factory applied by the look of it ) sealant.

There is some crumbling on the surface and it looks rusty however I have bashed and prodded it with a screwdriver and It holds up - havent managed to put a hole through it anyway even with a bit of force.

I think I'm still gonna get the jacking point cut off anyway and new pieces welded in so i KNOW its solid. Inner sills all A1 8)

Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now - not actually that much mechanical stuff to do underneath now - just got to get the bodywork prep done now.

Might have the carpet out next week so I can see how the potential problem areas looks from the inside

Suspension rebuild finished today

Going to order fuel pipes this week, rear light seals and new slave and master cylinders for the clutch - also gotta sort out a 4 wheel alignment and take it to a local specialist bodyshop I've found to get a proper quote for the removal of the front "jacking points", patching of the O/S/R inner arch and repair/reconstruction of the rear valance.

Actually drove the turd today for the first time in weeks. All knocks and rattles from the suspension completely gone, gearchange is perfect, and the new exhaust sounds amazing. The engine is very quiet and the new 'zaust appears to have restored a few horses :D

Problem areas on O/S/R inner arch

Image

Image

Image

Quite easily fixable I reckon - all the trim is out of the way, filler neck & vent system moved out of the way and its all hidden - shouldn't take a pro welder long to patch.

Just ordered new clutch hydraulics as well - slave cyl, master cyl, goodridge braided clutch hose :D

Looking forward to putting some miles on this turd soon 8)
