Won't hurt - its pretty old skool.
Will be OK in the summer but you will need to duct warm air from the exhaust manifold to it in winter to prevent the carb icing up.
Also you will need to block off any vacuum hoses attached to the old airbox otherwise it wont run right.

i think it already does duct the warm air from the exhaust manifold or is that something else on the side of the head?

There will have been a corrugated hose from the airbox intake to the old airbox which you will have to disconnect when you remove the airbox - unless some sort of clip or mounting comes with the filter you will need to find some way of fixing the hose up to the filter to feed the warm air in.
You'll be ok for the next 3 or 4 months anyway.

If we get another winter like last year then yes - but you should be OK until we start getting sub zero temparatures

It's the warm air under the bonnet that's going to loose power for you with that aftermarket thing, apart from the much smaller filter area.
The original system ducts cold air from behind the RH headlamp area, and has a temperature controlled flap to duct anti icing warm air from the exhaust manifold only when it's needed.
