I've been seeing a bit about turbo'd 325s etc but I quite fancy a supercharger. I looked on ebay and there seems to be quite a few stock mini cooper s chargers going for 150ish. Obviously I'm not looking for *huge* gains here but do you guys think it woud be a fun project to try and shoe-horn one if these on to my m40 1796cc?

why not - go for it, should make some nice power and torque gains if the head is up to it

i would supercharge an M42 16v engine if you're going to all that effort

It would make more sense to supercharge an m42... But the m40 is what I have. I think it'd be cool.

One caveat I can think of is I'd need to replace the airflow meter with a proper air mass meter. I'm going to install a Unichip on the car anyway so I hope that will be able to use a better meter.

I think the m40 is a reasonably low compression head and I think the standard mini coop supercharger is not a hugely powerful unit so I'm hoping for small to moderate gains without cooking the engine. It's intersting that the bmw code for the cooper s engine is m45... I wonder if there's any relationship at all... unlikely I s'pose

How much do you think the MAF,Unichip and mapping is going to cost ?

You would be better off supercharging the 1.8i and NOT the iS M42 as the cams timing overlaps making it harder to map on the standard ecu, to keep cost down it is cheaper on the M40

I can get the Unichips trade price (165) and can fit myself, also I have free access to a dyno to map it.

Not sure how much a maf will cost tbh, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find a second hand one somewhere.

At some point I'm going to be upgrading the cam of the m40, will this cause problems? This car is for road and occasional track use.

That Uni chip is well cheap and if you can fit it and map it your self it will save you loads !!!

Second hand MAF's arn't to expensive,sub 50 quid i think ?

Forced induction doesn't like big N/A cam's due to the over lap where both of the valves are open, this will let the boost pressure through to the exhaust and will be wasted.

You can get proper Turbo cam's that are generally a lower duration, less over lap and a higher lift than a standard cam or performance N/A cam,but you would be looking at having to have a custom one made for your engine.I'd stick to a standard cam

just wondering if the e30 m3 can be supercharged. ayone heard fo this being done. would be interesting to know what gains you would get and what the reliability would be of such a project,

Hey peeps!
I've been contemplating the turbo/ supercharger route for months!

Does anyone know if i would need a standalone engine management for the superharger?? Or would i be able to get an e30 zone chip and get it rolling roaded once in? :)

DOes anyone know the compression of the M20, its the later 1988 motronic version... As i am wondering whether to get the pistons machined so i could run more boost 8)

The thing with the supercharger is that there is power staright away!
wonder how it would compare to a turbo'd 325 :)

COz if its just uprated injectors, FSE boost valve and bolting on the superharger it soulnds like a plan!

Any help woiuld be aesum!
thanks
Chris

Thsnks for the info on the cams I'll bear that in mind when making my plans. So far the plan seems to be roughly the following, for the engine at least:

Dastek unichip
some kind of MAF, looking likely to be from one of the e36 engines, re the thread on MAFs etc
Stock mini cooper s supercharger.

Bigger throttle body too?

How much modification is the fueling system likely to require? standard, just a pressure boost, or new injectors and pump? Or is that one of those questions I'll din the answer too when I try to map all this lot together. This project is going to be done in stages because I'm a pooooooor student (violins please :).

The target bhp for this is about 160. Is this reasonable? Does anybody have other recommendation as to what supercharger? I chose the mini one because of availability on eBay but that suggests people are replacing the stock ones quite frequently for more power. Having said that I don't want a huge monster of a charger.... yet :)

Can somebody tell me once and for all what the standard bhp is for the 318 m40. I've seen 115 but measured 102 in the dyno which may indicate 105, which I've also seen.
