http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E34/S ... air_valve/

It's to do with a fuel tank breather, can't seem to find what the electrical connector is for on it though. Just going to disconnect it all, block up the breather pipe and see what happens. This engine is proving to be a bit of a pain in the ass!

Have done a few more jobs tonight, fitted my new Bimmerworld uprated engine mounts, and did some more on the coolant hoses going to the matrix. The hose that goes into the bottom part of the matrix I modified. I cut the bottom part out here:

Image

And then fitted it back onto the hose like this:

Image

Is that a similar sort of thing to what everyone else has done? Works well on mine, though will get some sleeving for it as it looks like it will rub on the underside of the inlet manifold.

I have fitted the top hose straight on, although I'm not happy with the routing of it as it touches the servo and inlet manifold, so will modify this one too I think.

IIRC, mine is one peice, I didn't cu ino any of the hoses on mine, all I added was the "T" piece.

I thought it seemed too long on mine, and went at the wrong angle to fit nicely.

Working all weekend so won't be able to do much for the next few days :(

If that thing is a fuel tank breather pipe it will be plumbed into the inlet somewhere so will need blocking off.
Where youve joined that pipe you need to put the T piece in to get a hose to the coolant bottle, then this pipe goes to the 'top' matrix stub and it runs over the servo.

Imo id sack that loom and get one from another M30, im sure all M30 looms are the same, ie one from a 530i, it would probably be less stress to graft an M20 loom in :)

Its the other pipe Lee, I've already done that one :)

Also, you are right, the pipe goes into the bottom of the inlet manifold, next to the pipe that goes to the ICV. What a strange engine I've got myself.... 8O

I'm going to give the loom modification a go, I'll have a friend standing by with a fire extinguisher when I connect the battery up!

Has anyone got a pic or any info on the 2 relays on the loom next to ECU please?

Ok thanks Rav, the auto-electrician who works with my Dad is going to get me some relays hopefully. That should be the last bit of loom to do then I can try and start it up :)

I fitted my refurbished gear linkage with z3 shifter tonight, feels nice and tight now. Going to offer up the 328 prop tomorrow after work and see what needs doing to the centre bearing.

With the 328i prop you fit the centre bearing to the front half of it, some say reverse it but apparently it will make it out of alignment.

I've got a couple of bags of relays from cars gone past (all E30's) and may well have both relays you can have for a donation to the zone to cover postage, can check after work tomorrow if you want :thumb:

Good luck with the prop :D

Got the relays sorted now, thanks anyway Charlie :)

Didn't have a look at the prop in the end, forgot it was my girlfriends Grandad's funeral yesterday afternoon so much drink was consumed afterwards and not in a fit state for e30 fettling! Going to give it a go tomorrow afternoon, got a few bits to get from BMW in the morning for the car.

From what I can see with the prop, if I put the e30 centre bearing on the e36 prop, then it should fit. The centre bearing is on the front half of both props.

Very close to getting it finished now, wiring is all sorted (hopefully!) and cooling sysem plumbed in. Got some more photos I need to upload soon.

Do most people have to bash a bit of the floor/bulkhead back a little to fit the downpipes in?

Yes it is tight in there but its only the sound deadening that needs squashing a bit to get the downpipe on.

Just got to put the exhaust manifolds and downpipes back on when I get the fixings and then it's time to try and start it up :D :D

Nice project 8).

Where exactly does the bulkhead need massaging? My engine bay is empty so it would be better to do it now. Here's my bay and the sound deadening is destined for the bin.

It's must to start it with out the exhaust system fitted even if you have done so already...

With just the manifolds it is such a nice sound :)

Rob, the bulkhead just above the Gearbox tunnel on the driverside, neads a little massage mate, and remove all the transmission sound proofing, it'll make it easier to work on the gearbox later if need be. :D

What oil are you suppoesed to put in the gearbox? It is from a 1990 535. There is an orange sticker on the side of the box that says ATF, but the rest of the writing is rubbed off. Does this mean use ATF or don't use ATF? :?

My sticker states to use ATF fluid. Just checked the bentley manual and it's not definate, it states " gear oil or ATF dependant on year and application"

I've always used ATF in the M30 manual box

Thank you Charlie :)

I've ordered a bigger puller to get the centre bearing off of the prop as mine was too small, then hopefully I'll have the prop sorted. Been away all weekend at a car show so no progress on the car this weekend :( Saw a nice turbo'd M30 E30 at the show though, very nice, looked quick on track too winkeye

Better write an update! :o:

Have got my e34 throttle cable fitted now, what a bitch that was to get the old plastic grommet out the bulkhead! Had to drill the thing out in the end then hit it out

Image

The m535 radiator fitted nicely, used a e28 m535 bottom hose

Image

Image

Got the z3 shifter fitted with all new gearshift parts. Sits in the middle of the hole in the floor, although it doesn't look like it in the pic

Image

Clearance between the rad and dizzy cap is not too bad, have got uprated engine mounts so hopefully the engine won't move around too much!

Image

My radiator hasn't got a temp sensor fitted, or a threaded part to fit one. Can I put a sensor in the middle part here to trigger the fan? Also, is the black one the one you need swap for the single pin m20 one?

Image

Unfortunately a few of the hoses on the induction side are starting to split so need to replace these sometime soon

Yes Lee, thats where they would be but it is just solid plastic, not threaded unfortunately :(

Rav, the fan works ok running it off of the middle sender then? Doesn't ever get too hot? I'm going to get it wired up so the fan comes on with the sensor when hot enough, but also have a manual override switch in the car

Do you have an 80 degree stat fitted???
I do, and the fan kicks in when it's just over halfway on the temp guage.

Not sure to be honest! Haven't taken it apart to look. Did you just use a normal BMW fan sender, nothing out the ordinary?

Just got to sort the fan and that should be the wiring done as long as I've connected my c101 plug wiring properly!
