im puting the m50 engine in my 316i can i still use the 316i ecu or do i need the 1 from the m50 thanks

You'll have problems connecting a four cylinder ECU to six spark plugs! Definitely M50 ECU, complete with loom. If the ECU has a silver label, rather than a maroon one, you'll need the matching EWS immobiliser stuff as well.
