My daughters car was cat c parked outside her house, taxed and insured. She got a notice to say move it or it would be towed within 24 hours. While she was out it was towed, straight to the crusher.
She fought for justice but lost, the council said it was a hazard to pedestrians!

Someone I know on another forum had their car remove and crushed after it was left untaxed on a large grass verge outside their house while they were on holiday. The 'off road' part of the sorn doesn't just mean of the road, it means 'on private property'

I find that very suprising... you 100% sure? I mean if its not being driven then its no more dangerous and likely to evoke a claim than say a wall or a tree!

In simple terms,any vehicle kept on or close to a road needs to have the correct,up to date documentation.

'Road',in this context includes any area that the general public are likely to stray onto without realising that the area is private property.So this can include forecourt areas between a footpath and a house.A vehicle that is uninsured can give rise to a claim against it's owner if a protuding sharp edge damages a passing pedestrian,for example.

To be 100% safe,a SORN'ed,un-insured vehicle should be parked in such a position that it is obvious to even a council employee that it is on private property,so behind a gate,or a locked parking post,or in a building is a very good idea.

I do hope that any council employee's amongst us will take the previous paragraph in the way I intended,not as a deliberate insult!

If I have a car with tax and mot in reasonable condition it has to be insured? Sorry if I am being pedantic but i don't think that's the case.

If your car is NOT on private property (i.e. NOT parked on a driveway, garage, private land) it has to be taxed, mot'd and insured. A SORN'd vehicle cannot be left outside your house parked on the road. Even if a car has tax & MOT, it must be insured if left on the 'road'

If you keep it in a place that could be considered to be a 'public road',yes,it must be insured,and you are commiting an offence if you do not insure it.

Note from my post above,a 'public road' could be private property,but if the public can stray onto it,it is considered to be a 'public road'!

I have several Cat 'C' cars here, and as long as they are still Cat C, and haven't had a VIC and got their V5's back, then as far as the DVLA is concerned they don't seem to exist.

The whole insurance thing is being twisted and turned so the police can dish out as many fines as possible. It has always been the driver who is insured in this country, other european countries you just insure the car. It looks like we will have both soon...

If you know a trader then bung them a few quid to put the reg on their policy, it will then be on the MID which means its legal to be parked on the road
