A member from the zone was breaking a 318i.
Excellent i thought, ill have the rocker and inlet manifold for my 316i. Came to a deal, sent of money, and recieved the parts today.

Now.. as far as i was aware, the 318i rocker and manifold are directly interchangeable with the 316i rocker cover and manifold?
Am i correct?

It appears ive been sent parts from a carb'd car, at a glance, looks like from an early 316? (not 316i)

If it is the carb'ed manifold, then the advert is wrong, it wont be an "i" of any size just a 316 or 318.

Hmmmmmm....!

C Plate spells M10 engine ( not the M40 you were wanting)

Edit: The advert is clearly half wrong.
The 318i is wrong (most probably a 316)
but he did say it was on a C plate, and you should have picked up on that.

Ad isn't necessarily wrong is it? M10 316 was carb, 318i was injection - or that's how I understood it anyway!
Then they all changed to m40 in 87...

It's all 4-pot wrongness anyway, so I shan't bother confusing myself any more!

Looks to me like those are m10 bits, which may well be off a 318i, just before it got the m40 (just like you'd expect from a C-reg car).

Like I said, I may be wrong, but it looks to me like a misunderstanding, unfortunately on your part...

Your right, my mistake. I wasn't aware that there was a pre ' 87 318i

From the listing, all the seller knows is it's a C reg 318i.

it's advertiused as a 318i.. being as it was advertised as an injection car it would have an injection engine.

I would say that there is a case of false advertising there and you should be entitled to your money back you shouldnt have to be a know it all. All you need to know if it was an injection engine and it was stated twice thrice? in the ad that it was.

As I see it there isnt an argument to be had

reading this I'm a bit confused. are we saying that they did a a 318i that wasn't an m40? Is that an injection m10?

yes, because the head and base of the engine are the same.
only the inlet manifold section is different.

I dont want to sound like a "know it all" but Coldo, you may want to look at E36 / E34 heads and manifolds, as they are newer.
( thats 316i/318i/518i 1987-1994 )

yeah you're right there isn't an argument, the advert is totally correct.

there are two types of 318i engine, only the later one shares parts with the 316i, and the advert states clearly the age of the car as a C-reg, making it an early type engine and therefore not compatible with a 316i. end of story.

sorry mate, 318i is correct, but its an m10

sure you'll get a refund.

If you want an m40 rocker cover and manifold I can keep my eye out for ya-should be up the scrappies this weekend possibly :D

Yea I'll add my bit to this as i have two cars with either engine sitting outside.



1983-87
318i = 1766cc m10 engine with L-jet INJECTION (this is what the parts are from and what is advertised) and what I have
316 = 1766cc m10 engine with CARB (valve cover would fit...)

1988-1992
318i= 1800cc m40 engine with montronic INJECTION
316i= 1600cc m40 engine with montronic INJECTION

Pretty much no M40/M10 parts are interchangeable.

If you need to ditch the M10B18 fuel injected head and manifold, advertise it on a 2002 forum. All of the 02 tuners are after M10 318i fuel injected heads and pay top dollar if its in decent condition (a scrub could do no harm).

Hmm... might be worth a look. what kind of money is "top dollar" exactly?

Yes thte pay top dollar for the "head" not so much the inlet manifold or valve cover....

e30 318i m10 head has the biggest vavles of all m10 heads

It depends.

Some of them just want the 318i head with a carb setup, as you pointed out because of the big valves, and here they pay up to $500 as they are a rare item these days, especially in Australia. 2002 racers have been known to pay large ransoms for them when desperate though ;)

Some 02 owners want to set up their own fuel injection systems and get the manifold as well IIRC.

M10 parts are definately in much greater demand in the 02 community however, and you will not find it that hard to sell, particularly that head, which every 02 tuner is after. I dont know if they do it much over in England, but in Australia every 02 enthusiast dreams of having that head on their M10.

Theres a story going around about a targa tasmania race where a 2002 turbo (home made) racer blew a water pipe and melted his 318i head. There was some lucky chap nearby in a rusted and smashed '84 318i beater that had his transportation butchered for almost $10,000 in compensation.

So, if you are a 318i owner, becomming a regular spectator at 2002 race meets where wealthy nostalgia addicts congregate is definately a good idea ;)

When i break my 318i, the parts will definately pay for what i bought the car for, what I spent on it, and then some.
