if you run an e36 box can you remove the dualmass in favour of an m20 flywheel?
is there any way of getting rid of the dualmass?
are e36 lsd's cheaper as they are more plentiful?
and are they 25% lock same as e30 or 40% same as e30m3?
cheers,
Matt

also will the e36 318is box run on an m52?
would this give the opportunity to run an e36 diff? and be able to junk the massive flywheel?

Not entirely sure but i would have thought that the flywheel would be ok wotever box you use?
Yes E36 diffs tend to be cheaper than E30`s but you would have to get the gubbins swapped over to an E30 diff case which aint a DIY job.Dont know about the lock tho.

You can use m20 single mass flywheel with any box! Aslong as you use matching starter and clutch kit.....
M20 single mass fly
M20 clutch kit
M20 starter
M20 single mass fly
M20 clutch kit
M20 starter
A 2 door e30 with 8 cylinders, what could be better

ok eko mate might have to take you up on that, just got to figure out what im doing first! what diff does it come with?eko wrote:Ive got a good low mileage M44 box if you want one?

(im on a very tight budget now thought after buying a dud engine so the box will have to be cheap if i do have it off you
e30 318is m42 box i was looking at running a 3.73 or a 3.64 diff
what would be the range of rear diff to run on:
m44 318is?
e36 328?
bimma nut why is swapping the bits a nightmare?
danthe i just checked on ebay and there are loads?! some of the m3 ones say 40% lock? is this the case that all m3s have 40% lock and all others have 25?
thanks for your help boys,
Matt

The box and diff both came from the same 99k 318ti(1999 T plate).
I was planning on using both on my own conversion but I then bought a full 328i so used that box instead.
Diff is a 3.38 and is perfectly matched to the gearbox.
£80 for both.

that means the m44 box is way shorter geared than an m42 box...
can anyone answer the other questions?
cheers

bimanut is saying you cant use the e36 diff? that would mean you cant run the diff without swapping the internals which is difficult? trying to understand why i couldnt do that?

Swapping diff internals means setting up the shims for the crown wheel and setting the 'crush' on the sleeve for the pinion. Complicated stuff involving engineer's blue, dial gauges, and the like.
The main difference between E30 boxes and anything later is that the E30 boxes have a 0.81 : 1 ratio top gear, while the later boxes have a 1 : 1 top gear. This means that a E30 box with a 3.91 diff will have the same overall ratio as a 3.91 x 0.81 =3.17 diff on a later box, so the 3.38 diff above is a 3.38/0.81 = 4.17 diff in E30 terms.

thanks for that brian thats helped me out loads, yet again!Brianmoooore wrote:Swapping diff internals means setting up the shims for the crown wheel and setting the 'crush' on the sleeve for the pinion. Complicated stuff involving engineer's blue, dial gauges, and the like.

so that ratio would be too high for me
and running an e36 diff isnt worth the hassle then ? i was under the impression that people were doing that? maybe not?
ok so the gearing of an e36 m44 318is box will that be the same as e36 m52 328 ?
cheers boys

E36 diff wont fit an E30 but E36 Compact diff bolts straight in.
The one I offered you above is in my car now but is coming out during the week.

cheers

Looks like dropped a gonad then,i sold mine for £250.
Didnt realise at the time the internals could be swapped

Tops out at 140+ but my car has undersized tyres so clearly wont be very accurate.randomspeedfreak wrote:okay what did it top out at?eko wrote:E36 diff wont fit an E30 but E36 Compact diff bolts straight in.

hmm interesting. i dont think id want to be doing more than 150 in an e30, i might have to revise what i want my gearing to be...eko wrote:Tops out at 140+ but my car has undersized tyres so clearly wont be very accurate.randomspeedfreak wrote:okay what did it top out at?eko wrote:E36 diff wont fit an E30 but E36 Compact diff bolts straight in.

E36 M3 evo diff is a 210 type, much bigger and needs its own subframe to be used even in an E36 (which is why there are plenty on ebay) this sized diff is useless to E30's unless you are expecting to be running 500+hp/lbsft and towing a few tonnes behind you
