German style number plates
Moderator: martauto
Hi dude. i make legal plates and we're dvla registered at my work. those plates are defo illegal due to the flag displaying D (should be GB) and the font (Anything other than uk standard is illegal including spacings to the exact mm). you could contest it but i think youll find that the copper was well in his right to pull you for it even if he was a jobber. like everyones saying it still clearly displays the number and unless you were taking the P, was hardly worth pulling you for which i dont believe you were compared to some i get come in. i never mess with plates incase the plod pull me up and it gives them excuses to rifle through the whole car and pick faults with nothing lol. worth a pop at court but if it goes pete tong i believe the fine goes up + court costs and being as those plates are a no no youre going in head 1st to the fire. mot tests wouldnt be taken into consideration i think youll find. good luck though. great looking car btw!
I pretty much knew my plates were a bit borderline on legality but figured it was worth a punt. If the Police had just been courteous rather than arrogant twats, I would have just paid up but saying that it's fraud and stuff like that pissed me off. Anyway, time will tell I guess.
Thanks for comments on my car. It's coming off the road next week as I'm dropping an M52/2.8 in to replace the m20. I'm just waiting on the bits like an alloy rad, to arrive. I've got the 2.5 inlet and induction kit etc etc too. Hopefully it'll all be done in time for Santa Pod.

Loving your E21, have a real soft spot for these
Ive had pressed plates on my car for nearly 4 years now, been pulled over a few times, once by one of those road side checks.
No problems but I have GB on mine, the D is asking for trouble.

Now that is a lovely ride- f**k the plates, get a GB pressed one and keep going
Just checked the legislation and all i can see is that the plate cannot be treated to be reflex-reflective- ie coatings so gatso pics are over exposed. provided the coating on the steel is reflective and the characters are the correct size in the correct place you are fine (apart from the "D" part.
I'm gonna treat myself to some without the 'D'. Where's the best place to get them?
If anyone wants an e21 just let me know. I have a few knocking around and one in particular would make a cracker of a car.
The nearest one is my M42 powered track car.

ive got mot next week -my mates doing it, so im taking the old plates in the boot, and say swap em over quick before commencing, if theres any issues
they are pressed german font, no gb or d or badges or spacing funny or any kite mark, post codes or anything, just plain rective backed with german font reg
had the plod behind me once or twice since and no pull

Put it in for the MOT and find out!
The guy who tested my car last year (not a mate) passed the car but said the plates are abit iffy.
I said to him if I get any grief from the law they were not on the car when it was tested to save comebacks to the tester.
I did get an advisory for one of my number plate lights though

I thought I'd already ruled on all this noise.
They look shite and should be illegal on that basis alone. German plates don't even look right without the state MOT and tax dots on them anyway.

I'm not too fussed if people don't like the plates to be honest. I'm sure there are just as many folks that do. Either way, it's no big deal really. I've put a lot of time and effort into putting my cars together but it would be foolish to expect everyone to like everything I've done to them. I'm not insecure enough to care anyway.

But then who would take up the mantle of effortlessly making you look like the charmless glob of bathroom tile grit that you are? True, not many can do it with such style as I - though it's not that hard truth be told.Kos wrote:in your own little world maybe, but i suppose that what counts eh ?

Chiswick, they do get around the airport police. Were they in all blue uniform? If they were then it's strange, they don't usually bother with mediocre thing like number plates
anyway, the plates suit the car and as you said who cares, and opinion is hardly worth a toss

They are for teenagers who have yet to shave and look to fill this gap in their masculinity with a piece of pressed metal that is a bad impersonation of the genuine article. The insecurity you speak of is better demonstrated by lusting after these 'orrible German plates. What are you missing?
What is this fascination with telling everyone you/the car are German when they clearly are not - can people not see how silly it is?
Let me just chuck a few of these in so we're all good.

About points - have you learnt that you were so wrong yet? Anyone would think you were a fed the way you rabidly jump into any discussion about the law - which makes your points fail all the more amusing.

back to the subject-
was chatting to my mate yesterday hes a chief mot tester at his garage, just been on a 5 year refresher course thing, and said they talked about number plates -
he said vosa send out the guidlines/changes etc, and with plates- they (vosa) have had so much hasstle, complaints, and way way to many failiures on petty things with plates, that some parts have now been changed back/relaxed a bit, he said as long as the spacing, reflective backing is proper, and no daft meddling, they might be ok , he said leave mine on and have my others in the boot, and he will see and if not hel just swap em over quick , il be waiting around anyway so im hoping as he does the mot i can stand there listening and watching, and he can tell me the state of play all round the car etc etc , booked in for friday 2pm

I'm going to just get some pressed metal plates rather than risk the hassle in the future. I guess getting pulled twice in nearly 3 years isn't bad though. I can see why the authorities get hacked off though as there are some terrible plates out there. The ones with the swirly fonts or trying to make letters look like numbers and vice versa. Still, takes all sorts I guess?

The idea of german plates is to stand out and show something very different, throw in some district badges and road licence from the E30 era and you have what some might consider as the genuine article.
The problem with the UK is that the majority of the population wouldn't even notice and the plates bring a lot of unwanted attention if you are anywhere but the south east. (police and vandals).
