Hey guys n gals. Joined up the other day, was looking for an e30 318. I had been after a 318is that was on gumtree, spoke to the owner he diddn't want any of my p/x's :( . Kept on the lookout couple of weeks later it turns up in cars4u . Went in and had a chat, traded my mr2 for it although i did have to cough up £750 as well. I think its in good condition for being 20 years old. Theres a few little niggles, wheel caps on the back, cracked headlight lens, the rev counter and mpg gauge stopped working earlier on today  The only bit of rust i can see so far is under the windscreen. The power steerings a bit noisy (not when driving), prob just a belt or a pump. Am I right in believing thats a common fault though so not too much to worry about. Anyways enough blabbering
Heres a couple of pics from the add

Welcome and well done on the purchase

Worth taking the cap off the PAS fluid reservoir and checking the level but also the colour of the fluid. If it's smelly & black then replace the fluid and it may help to quieten it down a little. If not the possibly a pump that needs swapping out.

The tacho and MPG packing up could just be a bust wire on the coils, but it could also be the SI board batteries in the instrument cluster leaking and mullering the circuits.

Get the rust under the windscreen treated as a priority otherwise it will become a real problem.

Cheers folks, The rust will be the first thing to do on the list as i can live without a taco and a clock =P I'll be putting it into a garage for that, i cant weld :( Not to sure about other plans, perhaps drop the front another 10mm thats a maybe though. Other than that i think its too nice to do anything else. give it a couple of months

iirc the gauge problem can be solved by dissconnecting the wire under the gear stick gator.... Brianmore advised me of this ages ago (its been so bloody long i may have my knickers in a twist and be thinking of another issue). Might be worth trying though. I will try and clarify this if i can find it :D

Nice car btw

£750 and trade on an MR2 is money well spent!

Lovely car, well done 8)
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

nice one mate, same as mine and cypriots , get that rust under the screen sorted it might be a rusted out scuttle, is it in the corner ? read up on here about usual suspect areas or find a local zoner/meet even, and get a proper look round every inch of the car see what might need addressing , looks nice tho

have a read of this to see some mods you can do to an is, quick shift , map mirror, strut brace, are superb to do

i just couldn't turn the offer down, i didn't even try to haggle him down =P just wanted to get it before he changed his mind. The mr2 wasn't even in that good condition was needing new arb bushes, discs. few things here and there.

Yeah the rust is in the corner, just under the bonnet, i'll get a pic up so you lot can tell me that ive bought a rusty shed :P

All E30's are rusty sheds mate, bar a lucky handful.

Welcome aboard! :)

have alook at the ebay pics of this car, youl see how it can go if left, its a common thing on these cars so make that priorety to get fixed

http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=197515

also check the front end of the sills (refered to as jacking points) where the corners of the front floor pans/wing/sill, all meet up, check for any rust there have a good look and poke around, these are common to go, take the rear door cards off (easy) and have a look in there for any rust at rear inner arches, and a good look around the boot under all the carpets, and lift up the rear floor carpets (just lift them up) and have a look at the floors there, there are bungs that can rust and always go and in most cases have either been repaired or need to be, and ideally get the front carpets lifted up and have alook under there for any rust, although a few bits of trim need to be taken off but not too hard , then youl have a good idea of how solid the car is , dont forget these cars are 20 years old and can look good from a quick look over it, but there can be things lurking so check all them things out and have a good look
