A friend of mine had his E93 M3 wheels stolen off the car on Wednesday night. He found it at 6am up on bricks. Apparently there's a gang going aroud locally (Chorleywood area) stealing wheels from 'performance BMWs'.
The wheels are distinctive as they are from the Edition version of the car and so are black instead of the usual polished finish.
Please let me know if you are offered any, or see any appear on popular internet auction sites.
The car has been recovered by BMW to assess whether any damage had occurred from being rested on bricks. Even without any damage this is likely to end up in a c.£4k insurance claim for wheels and tyres alone!

Quote came back from BMW yesterday for the replacement wheels and tyres....
....£4,700+VAT!
He's now thinking about putting on a set of Breyton Race GTS wheels in Matt Black instead. Very nice looking wheels and about half the price of the OEM ones.

Surely insurance will cover the cost of replacing the originals?

It will but he doesn't want to make a claim. It's on his company insurance and his drivers have had a couple of accidents this year with major claims against them. Premium went from £9k to £17k this year!!

One of the admins over on PBMW had his alloys nicked, they were the standard 335i affair.

A little update on this.
Replacement brand new OEM wheels and Conti tyres were fitted to the car at the weekend (c.£4k cost, didn't claim on insurance), owner was happy to get the car back on the road.
Then in the early hours of this morning somebody decided to remove his kitchen window, have a bit of a rummage around and took the keys to the M3 and a Merc ML. The thieves then used his kettle to de-ice the windscreens of the cars before driving them both away!
Seems you can't have anything nice any more without somebody wanting to take it from you.

This sort of thing is just going to get worse and more frequent, the country has never been infested with so many scumbags, there will be more cars/wheels stolen tonight, guaranteed

Place named above - it's a quiet, low crime(!) upmarket town in Hertfordshire.
Pretty sure he hasn't upset anybody. The thieves are targeting performance BMWs in the area and nicking wheels regularly. The burglary/car theft was apparently a professional job - whole window frame and glass removed and neatly stacked up outside. Laptops, ipods, cash all ignored. Just the keys/cars and his watch taken.

just as well he didn't wake up or the kettle would have been thrown at him. Its the first thing any pro would do when entering a house is to fill the kettle and boil.
With a litre or so of hot water coming at you would give any b'stard a good head start.
OK it'll be over the top to hide the kettle every night but at least make sure you are dressed before running downstairs.
Thankfully I'm an Electronic Security Geek and anyone entering my home will very quickly be blind and deaf for long enough for the situation to be dealt with.

How was the window removed? Was it double glazed? If so the fitter fitted it the wrong way round with the clips on the outside. I would make the fitter pay if this was the case.maf260 wrote:A little update on this.

Windows were fitted correctly, these guys knew how to find a way around it. uPVC windows are generally not very good at standing up to professional burglars.
Horrible point about the kettle though. It was assumed it had been used to de-ice the cars. Much more sinister now you've pointed that out!

Early pvc double glazing was originally beaded on the outside
Only recently i.e 2000's companies decided to reverse it so that the panes are inserted from the inside along with the retaining beads. The double glazing in a house i recently renovated had 1995 double glazing and the panes were easily replaced/removed from the outside by simply prying the beads out. Christ knows why they did it this way as everything is easier to do from the inside including replacment of glass panes whenever/if you have too

If they are taking that much money, they need to give some back when it's owed.

Front?
Was in halfords a few weeks ago and a guy walked upto the counter with a new socket set and wanted a refund but didn't have his receipt, turned out he had walked in empty handed and managed to get a set from the locked cabinet and took that up to the counter. Nearly got away with 200 notes but the manager checked the cctv under the premise of going to the office to get the paperwork for no receipt and checked.

Talk about some bad luck!
I makes my blood boil to see who work hard for their things have runts come along and take them because they are too lazy to get things themselves.

Latest update on this - the M3 was fitted with a tracker and has been found & recovered. Not sure what state it's in, but believe it's all complete. Apparently thieves park these cars up for a couple of days to see if they're recovered. I'm assuming it will now need news keys, locks and possibly alarm/immobiliser ECU?
ML is still missing, no tracker fitted to that.

Yeah, they will steal the car park it in a public car park or similar. They will also rip interior to bits looking for the tracker sometimes.

Please keep your eyes peeled as this car has been stolen AGAIN! It was stolen from the Chorleywood area in the early hours of yesterday morning.
It's a blue M3 Edition with the registration S70 RRA. The Edition stands out as it has black wheels and a black roof.
The thieves are undoubtedly the same as before, They broke into the house in the same way, took the keys and drove it away. He heard it instantly, called the police and alerted Tracker. They tracked the car for the first 15 minutes and then the tracker suddenly went dead. Can only presume they either found the box or jammed the signal.
If you see or hear anything please let me know.
Thanks

That cat is gone imo. They knew it was tracked and made it disappear in minutes, which could mean they had a nice little place to hide it until they can sort something out. That car must be woth 5-10 grand to them.

I heard (could be total urban myth) that a car in a shipping container blocks the tracker signal. 15 minutes radius in an M3 at night is probably 15 miles at most? Worth checking any storage places?
