1986 316 auto carb (still 60,000)
ive checked my transmission fluid hot with engine running and it is red and seems to be ok.
the car will not go up hills and drives like a car with a slipping clutch or any type of sierra in snow!
before i start to replace things i would like your ideas please.
What do you think? 1, box
2, torque convertor
3,diff ?
Before lack of up-hill drive, flooring it would produce a strange squeeling noise with bad vibration
I really need some sound advice on this one please (the e-30 WILL stay )
I do not bin quality!

Thanks for reading this,
Martin.

Does it slip in all gears. If it does does it rev out or just rev higher than it should for a given speed.

Does the fluid smell cooked.

It's possible you can sort it by sorting the filter/new oil.

When you select drive, how quickly does the car go into drive.

andy /daddy
just been out (soaking!) couldnt go on the road (too many other cars behind) and when selected drive and reverse engage straight away as do positions 1,2,and3.
when driven last (2weeks) it did slip in all gears and rev far too much for each gear, although the fluid didnt smell f**ked.
Im waiting for a cd rom set of manuals (hopefuly tommorow) so it will give me a good insight as to whats in front of me.
Can you get to the box filter in situe?
Thanks a bunch lads , keep then coming please!
Martin.

when you have tried the tips suggested so far, give this a try...

My old man is an auto box specialist, when I bought my alfa he recommended to test the torque converter i had to put it in Drive or Reverse and put my left foot on the brake and them give it some beans for a second or 2 at the most, he recommended it should hold/stall the revs at no higher than 1800. If it still revs then the converter is fooked.

I did develop a fault with the box on my alfa later on, lost 4th gear. Turned out to be some shit stuck in the valve body. I don't know if the valve body on the BM auto box is on the bottom and therefore easy to get open and perhaps give a blast with an airline to see if any shit can be dislodged. Gotta make sure it is squeaky clean in there.

It sounds like a pressure related problem to me, is it a 3 or 4 speed box.

Does it change gear properly?

just gone out(piss wet again) and tried the torque converter test!
I gave it some stick ( @4500 rpm ish ) left foot on foot brake , in drive and the revs were exactly as I was told they would be !!!!!

I tried it three times forward and in reverse (oh, ah, misiss!)
Cheers buddy , one thing less to think about mate!

come on lads were nearly there(?)

Thanks once more, Martin.
