Well ordered a full set of vanos seals, gotta be worth a try as the current ones look a bit perished and the filter is blocked up with gunge so going to give it a good clean out at the same time.

I'm pretty sure mine does. It's sending pressurised oil into the accumulator so it has pressure for the next startup.

Pretty sure I've heard M52s do it too.

Hi,

Check the Vanos solenoids are
working correctly.

A blocked Vanos filtre will also
contribute to poor running as
will leaking seals etc.

If the Vanos is unable to function
correctly then the engines performance
will be restricted.

Are you sure that the BMW Garage that
you visited did not check for this ?

Its one of the cheapest easy= fixes for
the S50 B32.

Regards,

The Gorilla.

Well pulled the vanos off it last night and all the seals had gone hard, have replaced them all and it now seems to pull alot smoother than it was doing, going to take it on a run and see how it does, still don't seem as good as my mates m3 but its getting there.

Stuff that i've replaced

Maf, ICV, all vacum pipes, all inlet seals, injectors, coil packs, crank sensor, knock sensors, cam sensors, lamba sensors, vanos seals, blue temp sensor, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, fuel filter,

Stuff i've swapped for others just to try

Ecu, vanos contol unit, exhaust manifold,

At first i didn't want to be messing with the loom but I decided i had to give it a try, so its been off and had all the joints re-made (incase of bad connection) and i've had all connectors cleaned

Have you done a compression test and cylinder leakage test sounds like it has to be a mechanical issue at this stage if all the testing you've done has been carried out correctly. Is there any way the chain timing could be off?

not done one yet, i've had to order a adaptor for our compression tester (the pipe wasn't long enough), so hopefully that should be here soon then it can go back in the garage (once i finished the car thats in at the moment) and have a look at it again.

will do a leak test on it aswell whilst i am messing

not sure about the timing being out as i've not had it to bits but suppose its worth a check

compression and leakdown test may reveal something. I thought it had already been done before swapping all the other bits and pieces.

In a way i hope it does then at least i know what it is but on the other hand i don't want to find anything major as i know once it comes out for a rebuild it'll not end up going back in.

but its time for a new project now so i am going to take the engine out and sell it on and sell the car, unless someone would want it as it is

What did you change in the end to sort it?!

I got 31mpg (ish) on the way back from the 'Ring in it.. Filled it at the station by the 'Ring, then the light came on my 55L tank as I drove up the road from the ferry @Dover.

30+ mpg 8O
I only got like 20 out of mine. But that's mixed between stop-and-go and high way driving.

the rubber coupling between the gearbox and prop bust the weekend before we was going to le mans, and after changing that it seems to be running fine now, very odd i know but must of just been a bit of vibration through the gearbox to the engine that was causing it.

was well impressed with the MPG, my mates coupe did the same and that was with us playing on the way there (there wasn't anythin between them :D)

its back down to low 20's round town though

8O 8O VERY odd.. You can't complain that it is solved though.

Low 20's around town is to be expected! I get that with my 328i..

Don't fancy keeping it now then? I still miss my S50'd e30.. Although a 328i makes it slightly less painful. What are you planning next?

I am the same.. 20 cars now in 9 years.

The e30 though, I had for 6years! Didn't get bored of that one.

I'd love to do an LS3 powered e36 Touring on gas..

Both of those options sound like fun though!

How fast do you guys drive on average to get 31-35 mpg? Is this with the 6-speed tranny?

5 speed box 3.25 diff

It was mostly a relaxed 75/80mph cruise speed.. With the odd bit of 'play time' :)

Had a skim through the thread but didn't pick up on whether it is a 3.0 or 3.2?

You still thinking of moving on to another project?
