I'm looking to buy one of these for my girlie :) Have send her fooking honda civic packing! :P

Now the model i think i should be looking for is a 2000ish 318Ti sport. However is keep seeing things like 316's with 1.9 engines and most confusingly a 2000/X 316i sport compact.
This car appears to have the sport bodykit, interior etc and a 1.9L engine but will it also have the sport suspension etc etc?

Please help reduce my confusion! :)

Honestly, it's hard enough finding a bloody colour she likes...! :P

IIRC Gareth, in the e46, the 316/8 had the same lump- just different tunes (a la 323/325 e36's)

Would she not just be better off with an e36 coupe?

The Sport pack was available on all Compacts including the 318tds. They're all okay and the Sport is worth having - just be careful of having the front bumper nicked.

Alas, it's 'a bit big' for her. she wants a hatch and getting her in a BMW is enough of a step forwards for me! :)

I think I'd have to go further to the dark side and shove a M52 in it actually. Not too high on the agenda yet though, this is her forst RWD car so 140bhp is plenty for now! :)

Oh cool, so if it's got a full smattering of sport parts it'll have the sport suspension etc too? (unless it's wearing someone elses bumper of course) :)

here's an example of an overpriced 316i but it's a 1.9 and with a very good spec. Now, what's the difference between this and a 318ti sport? I guess it's a 8V 1.9 or something?

Ta for the info gents :)

318ti sport is the pick of the bunch and try and get one as late as possible.
Sport has M3 front and rear bumpers (rear is compact specific) side skirts, suspension, black headlining,M badges, M steering wheel and gearknob and i think thats it.
I wasnt aware you could get 316 sports though, i thought they were all tarted up 318ti's.

Whats your budget?

That one did indeed look totally spot on, apart from the colour ( :x )
Infuriating?!!!!

my (her) budget is about £2k ideally nearer 1.5k but up to 2k if it's more local, very low mileage, decent colour combo etc.

Red is allowed if i spray the wheels black.
Green, silver and blue are out.
White is in as "it looks like a marshmallow"
any colour that makes her go 'oooooh, cooool' is in!

Cheers for having a look though :)

This one looks like a decent car with just ABS trigger issues and a steal at that price.

I'm surpised no one has mentioned that the e36 318ti has an M44 engine during that era, and the 316i has an M43 engine.

Early 318ti cars have M42s, I think, and early 316i cars have 1.6 M43s. The M43 is a good, bombproof lump though. My M43 316i had a way nicer engine than my E30 316i's M40.
I imagine the later 1.9 M43 is a bit better.

However, I test drove a 2000 X reg 318ti as a potential car for my wife a few years ago and the engine made the car. Shame the condition was a deal breaker.

A 316i would be a nice car, sure enough, but, well I like revvy multi valve engines.

weren't all 318ti's m44? i thought it was only early e36s that had the m42, and by the time the compact came out they all shifted to the 44?

as has been said, earlier 316i were 1.6 8v, later ones 1.9 8v, there's not much difference in the performance figures, but the 1.9 is supposed to have a noticable amount more grunt in the mid range
cheers,

The first Compacts were a 1600 M43 and 1800 M42. The Sport arrived in June 1995 with M3 style bumpers, sports seats, electric s/roof, front fogs, 15 inch 10 spoke alloys, 318iS suspension and black headlining. The 1.9 16v M44 engine arrived in March 1996 (Late N reg) about the time the Z3 was launched.
The 316i became a 1.9 in January 1999 (S reg) and used the M43TU 1.9 8v.

There were two option packs. SE with electric s/roof, extra interior lights, microfilter, rear PDC, remote locking and auto dim mirror. The Lux had these bits plus alloys, headlight wash, front fogs, OBC and rear headrests. Lux, SE and Sport could be had with all three engines. 318Ti's without alloys had wider steel wheels.

By 1998/1999 BMW had added a few bits - 16 inch alloys, clear lights, half leather and clear indicators on the Sport (316i/318Ti only - the tds Sport was dropped), air con on the SE and the Lux model was dropped - BMW made the PDC, headlight wash, fogs etc options.

The 318Ti 1.9 is worth having over the 316i. They go much better, don't use any more fuel and the M44 seems less prone to head gasket issues than the 8v engine - odd when they share the same block. The common problems are clanking electric windows which are easily cured with a new regulator, back arches are less rust prone than saloons/Coupes but still need cleaning out. A good clean Compact is a great car, cheap to buy and buttons to run. They don't have a coolant level warning light so you'll need to do a bit of a cooling system autopsy - remove the rad, put a new pump in and just check everything - especially the heater hose at the back of the head on the 8v.

i couldnt ever work out how mine was optioned, i have a facelift compact brochure which lists the three option packs you list above, but neither fits what my car had so i wonder if they were different on earlier cars? i assume adding the options it had separately would have been more expensive than just ordering one of the packages!

316i, metallic paint, grey bumpers and sills, front fogs, interior lighting pack, electric sunroof, remote cl, rear pdc, 15in alloys.
cheers,

My 1995 Ti had the electric roof, microfilter, rear PDC and auto dim mirror and is down as being ordered with '952' SE Package.

Yep :)

Picked up a 1999/V 318ti sport compact in red. 109k, leather, aircon and pretty well looked after with just a few 'honest' faults to tinker with. for £1100 it's a bargain i reckon :) The best bit is, it's totally unmolested, unlike most sub £1.5k cars. This one still has it's BMW Business radio/cassette player! :D

Sooooo, i bought some 17J8 ET20 style 122 wheels with the intention of a bit of a tyre stretch and a new black paint job. These cost me £115 with 2 good 245/45/17 goodyear runflats fitted :) I'll get those up on ebay then as they're far too big :)

I'm thinking something like a 205/40/17 needed up front and maybe a 225/40/17 rear? Open to suggestions here.

Oh the front is sitting up slightly as i'd not rolled the car after jacking.

Opinions? :bolt:

yep, mine were 8x17 et20, i've used 215 40 all round and used to get the very slightest bit of scrub on the side of the rear arches, 10 mins with a block of wood and a mallet would fix that, but i was on coilovers wound down low.

also had 215 45 on an 8x17 et20 on the front and they were fine, used to touch the plastic arch liner occasionally, but i didnt touch the metal arches, and again, was on coilovers with the fronts wound right down.

hard to see, but the wheels do tuck in a bit as the suspension drops, these are 8x17 et20 with 215 40 17s,
