being new to bmws I dont know - but is there any difference in size of discs from 1.8 and 2.5 cars??

the size is the same bot lower spec models had solid discs on the front and drums on the rear, larger engined cars had vented discs on the front and solid discs on the rear.
M3's had larger discs all round but incompatible with other models without the suspension being swapped over too

BMW was quite wierd with the specs though. I have seen plenty of facelift 318i models here in Australia with vented front discs and disc brake rear axle; though more often than not they've been Girling rather than ATE calipers.
Front pads from Performance Friction are the same, whether solid, vented, ATE or Girling. Rear pads are the same for all E30s (with disc brake rear).
Of course, E30 M3 is a completely separate car, with brakes nicked from an E28 (0395 front, 0396 rear).

AFAIK, if you specified ABS, you also got discs all round...? not that i've seen it myself, i read it somewhere on the interwebnet

ate power discs are poo they just carve up your pads
