Clay bars last ages, as a rule half a bar minimum is required to do 1 car, usually the whole bar if its the first time the car has seen clay. I work on a rule, 1 bar for 1 car & 1 Application so i use i clay bar per total car, but it really does depend on how much the clay pulls off as to how long it lasts.

just done this to my car will get pics up if people want, bare in mine my car has sat for 3 years the results with a good g3 are amazing
chemical guys have some good prices on clay, small box with 3 fine clay bars for about £15-£20, which is pretty good. Chemical Guys stuff is amazing. the results with a combo of their products is equal to the results with zymol, which is easily 4 or 5 times the price.
I am waiting for the funds to be available to get my favourite combo, but its going to cost be about £80.00 but will last years.

nice one mate, yes its diamond scwartz metallic
the thing whats annoying me at the monent, i clean it quick and a quick demon shine, and it comes up nice, found the meguiars wax is quite good, although not as good as the tin simonix for beading/repelant and protection feel, is that 2 days later its filhy again , seems to be a lot of dust around, like volcanic ash or somethign in the air it seems and laying a coat on the cars around here overnight , really gets to me
the other week was my 1st stab at detailing, so im learning, and no i dont have a polisher but thats what i want to get next , any recomendations for reasonable priced for a 1st timer ? ,but dont want one that will break on me
im thinking of buying some sort of car cover to put on the car at night/when not in use whilst parked up outside in the road, but not sure what ? , or is i can find something thyat matbe just covers the bonnet/roof/boot, and quick on/off , to keep it dust free, as it really gets to me

if you use good quality stuff, the CG combo is fantastic, you will only need to hose the car down for months. you can re-apply the wax when the beading is not quite as good. but thats it, quick rinse once a week and a wash (only use wash, not wash & wax) every couple of weeks, maybe once a month depending on how dirty it gets.
I am getting a silverline silverstorm rotary polisher (approx £50.00) no frills just does what it says on the tin, need to be carefull with rotary polishers though as you can burn through the clearcoat and knacker the paint.
DA Polishers are not as dangerous, can't really do any harm with them, the Kestrel DAS-6 is good and about £80.00
Once i have all my new kit (got rid of all my old stuff) have to pop up to swindon one day and have a pop with the rotary once i have it, and the CG stuff, see what you think, probably have everything around aug/ sept, then you can get a good shine and a couple of coats of wax ready for the crap weather to start.

My last rotary was a halfords own one that seemed pretty good, solid and robust, lets just say that was not the case, and i am now sueing them for personal injury.
I may get a Kestrel Myself, just that a rotary is more versitile and powerful, gets things done a bit quicker. Provided the paint it in good nick you can detail an entire car with a rotary in about 3-4 hours, with a DA you are looking 7-8 hours for the same.

ok nice one, i dont want to rick burning the paint or running before i can walk, might just get a polisher, and yes mate sounds good nice one when your all up and running let me know if you remember
the cars still nice at the moment and looking good and had 2 coats of wax a week and just washes down nice , but still finding it really dusty and car seems to get really dirty quickly , be better once the summer really kicks in , dont find the beading on the meguiars wax anywhere near as good as the tin simoniz stuff
ive just got a new sunroof panel i need to get all polished up and looking nice and hopefully its a nice color match, mines got a couple of tiny dings in it, and need to get a couple of tiny ones pushed out along the bottom of the car, and then re paint the door handles and all the black on the shadow line and gutter trim re painted , to finish the extterior how i want it, then thats when il be wanting it to look its very best

Paste or Hard wax always seems to last a bit longer, no idea why. the overall finish is just about the same, suppose its durability.
Mine is sat on the driveway while i am fixing it, was shiny (a bit) but dust etc and after a couple of days looks like a right state, half the problem is black, shows up anything and magnifies it.
I still have lots of filler to apply and sanding, then i can start priming and spraying.

google it, if youve never done it (like i hadnt until recently) it cleans the paint, like a nice detox, you then polish and wax it after, comes up so so nice and clear,£10 and a few hours work...get on itvendetta wrote:Sorry to be so ignorant but what is a clay bar used for

Clay bar is to prep for paint cleaning, then polish (can skip paint cleansing), then wax. Then just wash and topup with wax as needed.
should only need to clay bar the car, cleanse, polish and wax maybe every 6 months if done right.

It can do, it will protect the paint and the tell tale water beading will slow down after about 6 months.
I swear by Zymol for durability, but its expensive and very time consuming to apply. For a good shine and about a months durability, Rude Wax isn't bad. Cheap but contains carnuba wax, bright yellow liquid and doesn't smell too bad, easy to apply, give a couple of coats and its not bad at all.

got loads of dust floating around here at the moment, wash etc, 3 hours later and the car is totally covered in dust, my neighbour is washing his cars every other day at the moment.
I found my Rude Wax and also my Simoniz Liquid Hard Wax (both for hand application) and also found my AG Extra Gloss Protection.
Going to have to wash the E30 tonight as its really dusty
wait until the sun goes down and the temp drops so i should be able to start about 8-8.30, joy.

Yep, no problems if you use decent wax.
I've been applying Collinite 476 very occaisionally, all it needs after that is a quick rinse when it gets dusty, and dried off(with a terry towel/Microfibre/chamois towel) before the water marks dry in.
Gave it a wash last night, paint work is shocking, scratches on every panel (lots of them) so not taking too much care at the moment, Full Rotary Detail before it goes back on the road, then just have to save for a re-spray (the paint is that bad).
fellas...what do you recomend to sort the top of the wings out, a little faded scwartz black, just along the tops next to the bonnet line, its not major bad
ideally to make pristine, the car at some point wants 2 new wings and a re spray, doesnt "need" a re spray, its slightly above average 20 year old paint work, but if that was done nti would be show room, if i still have the car in 2 years thats what il get done
but just wondered what can be done to the wings
need a cple of tiny dings sorted next, only minor push out in bottom of doors you can only see in the right light , and them top wing bits really

i jsut wanted to use up the rest of that meguiars one, have an unopened tin of simoniz caranuba wax which i found good last time, although a ball ache to apply , compared with the meguiars that a whole car can be done in an hour, this takes 3 times as long, but is way more durable and feels a lot more protected
just going to clean it this arvo- its filthy yet again, doesnt seem to stay clean for 5 mins at the moment it annoys me
Polsta, is it the lacquer which has lifted, so the paint looks faded (due to there being no lacquer)? what does the paintwork actually look like? Pic would help. Maybe just oxidised slightly so a medium cut polish or maybe even just something like swirlX (megs) may well work, may have to apply a bit of pressure on the pad with swirlX.
In my experience i start with the lowest possible cut polish and work my way up the grades if i am not 100% what is wrong. Otherwise you can go totally overboard.

the same as using any 'adhesive' product, the key is in preparing the surface.polsta wrote:do you think wax really lasts 6 months ?
paint which has been clay bar'd, chemically cleaned and a good wipe over with some IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) to remove any residues or oils, will drastically increase the durability of any wax/sealant.
if its durability youre looking for, sealant is the way forward. to add intensity/gloss and more protection then layer a carnauba wax on the sealant (not the other way round!)
i would say 6 months is a little too long to leave between waxing a daily car in this country however, 4 months is more realistic.

how much are these products ? and a sealer...how much are they and how do you apply ? just the same as waxing ?
just finished cleaning the car and looks great, hosed it off and quickly wiped dry with micro cloths, and just hoovered inside and cleaned the seats with foaming upholstry cleaner, looks great, just want overly impressed with the durability of this meguiarx extreme durability
wax, but 3 boats its had in the last month, so hopefully its built up a bit, might see how it lasts just by cleanign like above
but ...would it be ok to leave a week or 2 then give a wax over that with the tin wax ?
or might try another product
car was extensivly detailed and polished a few weeks ago- ag clay, farcia paint recovator,ag super resin polish, then the meguiars wax , took me 3 days but well worth the effort
the tops of the wings....yes its just a bit of laquer lift, its not peeling bad or anything and just average for a 20 year old car, the bottoms of the wings were crusty anyway from mud flap corrosion but ive had them sorted out and looks like new, and 1 wing has been re painted in its life somewhen and itsnt the very best job and was some years ago although only looking close and inspecting can you tell
what im doing...is putting a set of mud flaps back on the car- maybe completly tiger sealing the front ones on aswell as the brackets completley bonding to the wing/arch- so no crap at all can get in there, not sure yet, ok i know they will be permanent, but also no crap will get in there to corrode or build up
my long term plan is to keep and maintain the car/paint as nice i can ,obtain 2 new or mint wings somewhen and have a full re spray in maybe 2 years if i have the car then still
il always have an e30, so im thinking well maybe the hasstle of selling the is for a sport, and the risks of getting a decent one etc. and when my is has a lot of money spent, factory options like map mirror, rear head rests, rear shelf blind (just waiting for dye to be delivered then spray and fitting this) , i got bilsteins and ebachs, quick shift kit, pristine interior, tool kit, all the boot extras,370ml tech 2 wheel, everything on the car works properly, all history and everything, its a smooth tight drive and hold to the road so well
...im thinking really, all i "need" in the future is 2 wings and a re spray, to have a solid and glorious is e30
and maybe just do an engine conversion somewhen down the line when i want more power, yes it would be a shame to change the enginbe in a nice is, but then its a solid lovely car and i know it inside out now, and to go through so much expense and aggro to upgrade it for another e30 with more power- sometimes when i think about it is a bit daft, when i should just put the power in mine , wel see
il get some pics up of the wings mate and lets see what you think i should try
ive seen some guides and stuff how to renovate paint via googling, to sort things like orange peel etc....by using 1500 wet and dry and polishes etc to bring it up like new, wouldnt want to try that myself, but thinking maybe getting someone who can do that sort of thing and really get them nice without paint to just sort them for a couple of years

sealants are just synthetic (man made) polymer versions of natural waxes (ill call them last step products [LSPs])
http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog ... ction.html
depending on the colour of your car, waxes/sealants give different effects.
sealants are just as easy to use as waxes - personally i prefer liquid based LSPs for ease of use
on my diamantschwarz e30:
After washing/claying/cleaning/polishing the car, wipe down with IPA to remove any residue
http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog ... -cat9.html
add a layer of Werkstat Prime Acrylic to clean the paint, but also prime it with a layer of sealant
http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog ... -cat9.html
2 coats of Werkstat Acrylic Jet (bulk of sealant protection)
http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog ... cat12.html
multiple coats of Werkstat Carnauba Jet (wax, to add depth, gloss and further protection)
http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog ... cat13.html
this will last up to 6 months, and probably a little more if you do as I do after every weekly wash, a quick spritz with Werkstat Carnabu Gloss (quick detailing spray giving a brilliant shine after each wash between waxing, adding protection)
http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog ... cat14.html
i must stress how easy these products are to use. Ease of use is just as important as any other facter IMO.
also cant stress enough the saying "little is more" with these products. Literally a little spritz does a whole panel - any more and youre wasting product, ending up with a soaking wet MF cloth and streaks everywhere. All the products above will probably last you a couple of years, using every 6 months. The quick detailer is the only one which youl notice goes down, if you use it every week.

im just getting ready for work so il have a proper read and look throuigh the links lateron, appriciate the info and look forward to reading
how much roughly am i looking at ?
also the quick detailer i use is demon shine , picked up about 20 litres at asda silly priced once, norm was it and then use that whilst wet to dry with micro cloths, and it comes up lovely and streak free and a super shine, bearing in mind this is twice a week -i like to do a quick clean twice a week to just keep any birds crap and all the pollen etc of late and rain marks to a minimum, plus kills time on a quiet afternoon
