thankfully its not mine

my mates e30 has been sitting for a while, but use to run, now when you start it it turns over but wont start. Its had a new air flow meter and the throttle body has been cleaned. if you try and rev it from the accelerater or the throttle body, the revs will not increase at all they jsut stay at 800 while you try to start it then the engine clonks out. T

here is also a strong smell of fuel, hence why i think its a fueling problem/starvation?

any ideas as we really need to get it running for college next week??

Pull the fuel pump relay, try starting the car.

If it's flooding it will start for a second and then die, replace the fuel pump relay and try again.

Check all work that has been done, you say somehting about 800rpm, will the car idle or is that just the speed it turns over at.

Has the TPS and ICV wires been swapped when the throttle body was messed with.

I did this when I changed my engine over, the car would start then cut out, start then cut out.

What engine has it got in it??

This is exactly what my car did on holiday this year. If you read my extremely long post, you'll see it was the fuel pump.
Ran when the ignition was switched on, but as soon as the starter was engaged, and the voltage dropped, it stalled.

That's what mine was. All the copper on the motor commutator worn away right down to the plastic.
I had the advantage of a duel fuelled car, so I could run it on gas instead.

do you mean you start it, it idles on its own for a second and then dies, and the throttle makes no difference?

if so my guess is AFM not connected/bad connection/AFM broken

which gives the sympton described above

My guess would be that the AFM hasnt been plgged back in, after removing mine, I forgot to reconnect the electrical plug and that wouldnt let me rev the engine, it just went all ropey when you try.
