The boot on my new e30 is smaller than my old. Both are 4 door saloon (one an early model the new a late) there seams to be something behined the rear seats, about 10 cm wide, the seat back covering all looks different and comes right up to the wheel arches.

Whats going on? Its a south african model so i'm thinking it may be a long range fuel tank?

Will take the cover off and have a look at some point. and maybe take some photos...

What do you think it is?

Special area to store drugs/guns?

Dissapointing. - The guns/drugs compartment was a much more exiting idea.
There was a thread on another site a while back, where someone in the US found that the left hand half of the fuel tank had been blanked off in the middle, and there was an access panel into it behind the vertical piece of carpet in front of the rear seat.

That looks about right cause i'm sure i saw to filler pipes when i was changing the wheels.

hmm interesting, if a bit useless in this country, especially taking up boot space.

Might be usefull with a m30 though!

Will take pics

It is true! But it still might be!

That m3 in the states with the small fuel tank was what i was thinking about when i wrote about guns/drugs and it being south african as well..........................

Does your fuel guage have a large white area near the full mark? And when filling your tank, do you ever have a problem filling it completley?

Euro E30 M3's have these long range tanks too, and they are a pain, BMW also realised this after fitting them, with owners complaining they could never fill they're tank, they're answer iirc was to leave the tank drop as much as possible before re-filling....this doesn't always work though!

My tank is a pain to fill!! :x

I have yet to fill it as it came with 3/4 of a tank! (nearly as much as i paid for the whole car....) not looking forward to it now

Are they literally two tanks? and is it possible to take one part out, or are they all inter connected?

Can see a white bit on the guage, is it solid bit of white rather than a broken line (which i do have)? Its all in litres/km anyway....

i actually bought a long range tank.Only the tank no pipes etc,i am unsure if i can fit it to mine though as its a 1990 car and on the etk it only lists the long r tank up to 1987.
What do you recon ? Pain in the arse, dont fit it ? Or
Any advice on fitting it and if it will go in my car.

cheers

Yeah that's it, the solid white bar, the marker before the bar is your 'usual' fuel tank, you'll find that most of the time, when the fuel pump clicks and stops pumping, the guage will only be at the beginning of the solid white marker, to fill the long range tank, on my car, I have to slowly fill it, being careful that the fuel doesn't spill back out.

Andy, I see no reason why you can't fit the long range tank in your car, for the extra fuel it holds though is it worth it? I don't think we really need it in this country.

Yea i think the boot space would be more usefull! Think its 77 litres or something. Would only need to fill it every month and a half with the mileage i do!
