Is it possible to get a key to fit a specific lock?/ My car was sold to me with an ignition key but no door keys, i lock the car with the alarm but would like a back up if the alarm fails.
Can you get a key number of the locks(as you can with vauxhalls, normally the inside of the tailgate lock barrel has the key number stamped on it)??
P.s, i used to be a vauxhall and Ford buff!! embarrasing i kno!!
Locks & Keys??

I'm pretty sure you can get a key to a number, but you will need to take the door locks apart to decode the number.
Best bet is to get a set of tumblers from the dealer and rebuild the door lock to fit the key you have, or the other way round, sort the ignition to match the doors once you have a key.
Its a fiddly job but well worth it.

Once the lock is out it's just a case of popping a circlip off and pushing the inner part out that contains the tumblers.
Once this is out (very easy) remove the tumblers by pulling them out and fit a tumbler with the little spring and push the key in, if the tumbler sits flat with the edge of the barrel you have the right. It takes a few goes to get it right. I start at the outside edge of the barrel and work inwards so you dont have to rebuild every tumbler you've already done everytime you put the next tumbler in.
Heres a couple of pictures to show what I mean.

what it should look like with the key in (only did one side of the barrel)

What should happen is that with the key out the tumblers stick out under the pressure of the spring and when the key is in they all sit dead flush with the barrel allowing the key to turn.
You will probably find that you can get the lock rebuilt without buying a tumbler set, if you find one that wont fit you can leave it out, there are 12 tumblers so 1 or 2 missing shouldn't matter.
Hope that helps
The eagle eyed will notice that the first pic only shows 11 tumblers, I dropped the lock and lost one.... good job it's a spare!

How do you remove the actual barrel?

Take the door card off, I think there is a small cover to protect the lock, remove that then you will find a clip that locks thebarrel to the inside of the door, prise this off and wiggle the lock off the actuator rod. There should be a clip on bit to lock the rod into the arm on the back of the barrel.
It's fairly straight forward but a bit fiddly if you have JCB digger bucket hands
Hope that helps

The retaining clip slides sideways towards the front of the car, and can be removed by a long screwdriver through a hole in the inner door panel.Andy_magic wrote:Take the door card off, I think there is a small cover to protect the lock, remove that then you will find a clip that locks thebarrel to the inside of the door, prise this off and wiggle the lock off the actuator rod. Access to the locks area is greatly improved if you unbolt the lower part of the rear window guide, unhook its top end and swing the bottom end forwards and up.
