Just had the car on the diagnostic, with another new crank sensor ...
cleared all the fault codes to get it out of "limp mode"
took it for a quick blat, still only revs to 5.5 ish
put it back on the diagnostic and the following came up
hmmmm wonder which one is causing limp mode
14... intake air temp
55... o2 sensor before cat
68... tank venting valve
65... camshaft sensor
214...vehicle speed signal
so looks like i need yet another sensor

was it a genuine brand new BMW (siemens) crank sensor mate?
I've heard of aftermarket ones not clearing fault codes.
Lambdas defo plugged in right (front manifold lambda plugged into the plug nearest the rear of the engine, rear branch to the plug on top nearer the front of the engine)
Venting valve will always come up as you've got rid of the carbon canister crap
Not sure on the air inlet temp sensor or the speed sensor/signal

Yeah Lee, it's Siemens crank sensor from BMW
but it's the cam sensor that's giving off the fault code mate,
I'm sure i plugged the sensors in the right way, but i'll check just incase,
I knew there vent code would of been there as its not plugged in, it's in the bin
I'm thinking air temp, poss the MAF??, but that wouldn't cause the gimp mode...(?)
I'll just change the cam sensor and see what happens

Right i need help guys, i'm as sick as a chip
i changed the cam sensor for a new BMW one,
just had it on the diagnostic again and now there is 3 codes that came up,
cleared them,
took it for a spin,
woosh straight up to 7000rpm,
turned around at the bottom of the road, and instantly it went back into "limp mode"
stuck at 5000rpm and wouldnt go any further,
back on the diagnostic and the codes that were there are...
14... intake air temp sensor
55... o2 sensor number 2 before cat
68... tank venting valve (forget about that one, it's not plugged in)
214...vehicle speed signal (not connected)
anyone got any insight on this?
would a faulty lambda cause limp mode?
air intake temp sensor, is that the one on the underside of the inlet manifold?

I'm an amateur with this stuff mate, but my money would be on the speed sensor. Dan will know which wire it is on the C101, think it could be pin 14 but not sure. The lambda won't help though if that is duff, nor will the air inlet temp under the manifold

the speed signal is not connected because i dont have it on erm.. one side of the connector or the other lol
Same as quite a few people mate,
Weird thing about the lambda tho, i'v been in limp mode for a while now, and the code for the lambda came up before i had it MOT'D
took it for an mot and the emissions were spot on,
i thought if one of them was "duff" then it would over/under fuel?
and that would of shown up on the emissions test?
Slightly ot.. but not..
which connector plugs into the air intake temp sender on the inlet manifold?
the one that branches off near to the maf connection?

Yep i dont have pin 14 on the E36 side, (speed signal) so Willnz I think, told me just to leave it off, as he has ran his for some time without it connected,
and it hasnt caused him any trouble

I don't think I have the speed sensor connected on mine and no probs, there would have been one on my touring I think, but not the chromie. I have no idea about my wiring as I just bought one of Dan's looms and went out to play.
Strangely, I recently tested an ECU for Dan and it went into limp mode with revs cutting at 5k, when he read fault codes on getting it back it had codes for MAF sensor and cam sensor, yet my ECU runs fine as far as rev limit etc is concerned. This is why i have just got hold of a spare MAF sensor to try.
I think when thbe lambdas are messed up or connected the wrong way it causes bad running rather than just cutting the revs early. When I ran Dan's ECU the car drove fine and delivered the goods, only to spoil my fun by pegging the revs to 5500.
I can't remember the air temp plug scenario much. It's only a 2 pin plug so there are not too many options as far as the 2 pin sockets available which will reach there. Your oil light goes out doesn't it? The only 2 pin plugs I can remember are the air temp, oil pressure switch and temp switch.

i think you can goose your engine driving it on limp mode craig, the engine will be over-fueling and can wipe out the hone marks in the cylinders.
have you got the big brakes fitted yet? i think my drivers side caliper is sticking slightly .

I think the one you tested for Dan must of had fault codes on to begin with?
and in order for it to run properly, the codes have to be cleared,
I'v just been out to check all connections once again,
and i'm 100% sure the're all spot on,
And just the same as you, it drives/potters around perfectly fine, to only thing it wont do is Rev all the way, past the 5-5500 ish mark,
might pull the lambdas out and check the resistance on them,
to see if they differ from each other,
and just buy a temp sensor for the inlet,
to see if that will get me out of this fookin "gimp mode"

Mick was raping a 328i at the frag yard today, he may know if exhaust still on it, need to check they are the same plug connectors as yours though.
No idea what new OEM ones of these cost, I'd guess at about £100+ a piece
non-oem here

I know all about the connectors on them all too well Lee,
Had a right fook on with these things not so long ago,
the ones i had originally didn't fit in to the connection sockets,
So Danski swapped the lambdas over for me, I sent him mine, and he sent me these 2 back
I know of the frag yard Mick was in, and im not going to bother, the last things i got from the scrappy didn't work,
so might have to bite the bullet yet again!!!!
and buy new

Good work mate
Can't wait to see what a M52 with a shot of gas goes like.
Makes a lot of sense really, a M52'd E30 is a quick road car, but when you really need to lay the smack down, whoa another 100hp, how nice is that

I can tell already it needs "just a bit more" but that will come in time, i'm just pleased it's finally running and working like it should,
oh and I might have to put the smack down at york at the end of the month
(will I have to be in a different class with the nitrous running??)

Need to revive this thread as I'm in the same fookin predicament as you were Craig
Had codes read, they were-
O2 sensor
Vent valve
Exhaust flap solaniod
Speed signal.......
Wiped them, took the car for a rip and was out of limp mode. 7k rev limit, but 5 mins down the road back into limp mode!!
Went back to garage and same codes appeared... Lambda's won't cause limp, vent valve is no bother as is the exhaust solanoid.
Mine is down to speed signal also, I've had about 4 dif ecu's plugged into this engine and never had this issue!! But now this 1 will not play ball.
How did you overcome this Craig?
By the way, pins 14 (both sides) are wired up, so speed signal wire has always been present

Craigs issue was different Ant.
Lambda has caused limp for me in the past, and would add up with what you were saying about your previous iffy running before fitting this new ECU.
Try the old one out again and give me a bell mate

I'm not tryin to go over your head here Dan, you've been of so much help to me in the past ect... Just thought that Craig had this problem for weeks.
Would a lambda (or 2) being that fuked cause limp then?? I've checked pin 14 both sides and connection feels ok so I'm thinking, "why would it even show up? Never shown up before
