Hello guys!

Anyone who have some experience with the good old hatch from the 80s, the Peugeot 309 GTI?

Im tempted to buy one as a every day classic...

that one looks nice, but its still french, rough shape and size not a million miles from an e30, id rather just have a cheap basic e30 than one of those

Get a goodwood. It is the only one that has a very small chance of going up in value.

Seized rear beams, french electrics, blown head gaskets and unpleasent previous owners are their major draw backs.

I have just saved another 205 mi16.

The Goodwood version was never sold as new here in Scandinavia, so the only versions to look for in the local autotrader is the GRI version...

I will give the seller a call on this car to morrow, who is worth to be saved!

I was very nearly was going to get one.. After doing loads of research, the one I wanted was a ph1 2door GTi, in red really as my dad had one 15odd years ago.
Rust wise about the same as any 80's car.
Places to look out for are the rear light clusters tend to lent in water, the result is poor brake light brightness.
Rear beams cost around £450 to refurbish, look for rear camber on rear wheels.
Blue smoke on start up. The xu engines do tick.
Rust under the boot carpet result of the leaky rear lights.
Alot cheaper than 205's/E30's for a good one expect to pay £1500 for a above average one.
Goodwoods only came in ph2's and had a wooden steering wheel wooden gearknob and leather.
Parts are hard to come by.
Their forum is small, but friendly, and the mod on there has a pucker ph1

Lad I know has just swapped his Sierra XR4i for a 309gti Goodwood.

I've always rpeferred them over the 205, just a shame I've been converted to rwd now though

I used to Rally 309GTI's and 205GTI's, great cars. ok the 309 is not quite as quick as a 205 but its more comfortable and the is a bit better too, not quite as nimble either but personally prefer the 309 to the 205.

I used to drive a 309GTI for Losse surface rallying and a 205 GTI for Tarmac rallys. the 206 GTI (when we got it) was used a a general for anything car, no where near as good as the 205 or 309 on a rally stage.

The girl and me will get a baby in September, so the 205 is a dead end! We need something with a little of space and a boot who can handle a baby trolley. Off course I could do like every one else, buy a brand new Audi A4 TDI with a credit, and cars in Norway is expensive so we are looking about 40.000 ish sterling for that sort of a car here.

The fuel prices is not looking good these days, so a 6 pot M20 is out of sky too. I drove a Peugeot 205 GTI last weekend 540km and it cost 75 quid in petrol.

My plan is to find something from the 80s you still can run with a good economy, well Im temped also on a one owner E30 Touring from 94 (316i) but lets see what I end up with. Thank you guys so far!

That's an Alfa 90, 1984-87 interim model between the Alfetta and the 75. The UK only had the 2.5 V9, but there were 1.8 twin cam (carbs), 2.0 twin cam with Bosch LE Jet, 2.0 V6 and VM Turbo Diesels as well in LHD.

A far more interesting turd than a 306. The 306 isn't without merit, but they're just forgotten. Bit like an Alfa 90.......

what about an nice old audi 80 tdi, economy, build quality and cheap to buy, the last ones are in 1.9 TDI format, about 93-94, not a bad way to spend about £1000.00 for a good one.

my mrs has a mk2 golf gti as her everyday car. it's totally reliable, costs peanuts to run, has massive amounts of retro charm and is great fun to throw around when youre in the mood.

plenty practical enough with two children.

Nice , I owned one for less than a week and earned a fair few quid on it
I had one of only 3 automatic 309 gtis made

They are good cars when they work!!! but the are very fragile It is owning these and some ford wrongness that turned me to BMW because i was bored of walking everywhere
