My engine in my 1990 316i Coupe has just given up on me, there is a 1.6 M40 engine available from a 1992 Touring, would that be a straight fit? Also there is a 1.8i available aswell, would that be a straight fit? or would it have different manifold etc etc?

Also how difficult is it to perform a transplant (I'll most likely just go for the 1.6 M40)

Thanks!

Why not put a 325i in it?

Both 1.6 and 1.8 engine's are identical to the one in your car,so should be a straight swap.

Fitting one of the proper engines will involve a little more work.

Haha I expected people to tell me to fit a 'proper' engine :) how difficult are the electrics? are they just plug and play?

Plug and play brother.....

Malcom (daimlerman) has converted a four banger to a sixer.

On a 'like for like ' swap,yes.....but.....there's always a but....

Read through Brianmooooore's sticky regarding engine electrics in the 'swaps' section.

Even the 325i feels not enough. If you are going to take the effort to put a different engine you might as well but in the 325i.
