I have a 1986 325 Sport making strange noises in last few days, have been told to replace Cam real quick before engine pops.

You boys seem to know a lot about cams, I don't want to have to rob a bank, so any suggestions on good / cheap replacement cam, and how long do you think I willl need to do the Job? Thing being I do not have a spare car!

Would it be easier/cheaper to buy a recon head?

for that price it's rude not too mate!!
I'd say a 280 would do the trick nicely...

however even though it's Ԛ£100, you will have to spend a further Ԛ£100 at least even if fitting it yourself.

but reading through this thread, i won't have to modify anything valve wise? And is it alot easier to fit if the head is removed? i've heard it can be done with the head on the engine but is a pain to do? Jim your 2.7 sounds like it's going to be quite tasty!

Yea you won't have to uprate anything, there are Schrick valve springs but they're Ԛ£75+vat and even Schrick say they're not necessary, personally I'd say they'd only be worth the purchase on a nuts cam like a 288 or higher really.
Haven't heard of changing the cam with the head still on the engine myself, but I imagine it would be more difficult, in my novice experience I'd say an entire Saturday afternoon would remove the head and strip it down to the cam.
2.7 is coming along nicely, everything is going off to the machine shop on Monday or Tuesday, and in that time I'm hoping my 282/272 cam arrives so we can start the building straight away :D
