Is that an E36 M42? The inlet fanimold is wrong for an E30.

My missus had a dose of that once. I believe the application of yoghurt will sort it out.

How did you do the conversion? How did the electric side of it work out and the ECU?
Looks great in the engine bay.
What are the results like? This engine is a 1.9 right?

My 1.6 was on its way out so thought if im going to do a change why not for this. The change was fairly striaght forward. The m42 bolts straight to the 316i gearbox (although you need to change the spigot bearing 5 min job), the 316i sump needs to be put onto the m42 engine as well as the engine mounts.
The electrics wernt to bad either. I used the e36 318is ecu, but this needs to be a pre 1996 ecu without the ews alarm thing. I then managed to get the wiring diagrams for both the e36 x20 plug and the e30 c101 plug. You will the e36 318is engine harness plug from the e36 car. You car then wire up that plug with the old 316i engine harness plug so everything will just plug together.
I think thats all if you need anyother info just let me know

It sounds straightforward enough, just a case of getting the right bits in advance, it would be the electrical side which would fox me. How does it go now it's up and running. I really like the characteristics of the M42, great engine. Did you do any other upgrades?
Cheers

The electrics seem hard but if you have the right info then its easy. I can try and dig out the wiring stuff for you when you need it. It runs brilliantly can't fault it. Sounds nice and rev's cleanly right to the red line. I replaced all the suspension bushes, brake lines and wheel bearing i also put disc brakes on the rear as the 316i came with drums. I've put sport shocks on and 40mm spring. Thats it. Now its just general maintainence and enjoying it.
