My youngest bro has nearly finished his first year driving in a 1.0 Micra, which was, errrr, cheap to insure. Now he's looking for something a bit nicer. He's thinking about an A3. I don't know much about them, but haven't heard many people raving about them...
So what's the lowdown? Any other suggestions? The brief is anything up to 2 litre, price up to £1500ish. Room for 4 plus a mountain of outdoor equipment is a definite plus. It'll get abused, driven through streams, parked in caves (seriously....) so has to be reasonably well built.
Audi A3 - are they any good?

It sounds like he needs an Audi Allroader not a bloody A3.
Good cars really imo but it has to be 1.8-1.8t anything less is to gutless. The insurance will still be a killer though no? Or maybe a standard ride height E30? it'll go through streams ok

Nah, something a bit more modern. He doesn't share my love of old bmws!
It's not going to be off-roading, just driven into forest parks etc. Him and his mates do a lot of rock climbing, caving, that kind of thing, so something reasonably robust. I suggested an E36 touring, but apparently 20 yr old girls don't like estates!

Their ok. The original shape is based on a Mk4 golf and the later one from 2004 is based on a Mk5.

That's not a bad call dude. Those Subarus are pretty good iirc...
Cheers Barry, should have occurred to me to think about it that way. He mentioned the 'C' word yesterday - Civic that is!

The A3 is a well screwed together car, however,it has it's irritants....
Based on my missus 1.8 on a V plate.....
Front wheels scrabble on pull away.
OVER sensitive ABS.
Poor rear vision.
Annoying 3 position spring loaded opening on the doors,a pain in carparks.
Annoying beeps for head lights & low fuel warning.
Annoying rear demister which turns off automatically.
Loud interior heater blower.
Hard seats.
Over sensitive seat belts.
Badly positioned electric window switches on driver door.
Terrible handling in snow/ice/slippery road surface.
Annoying "blind spot" side mirrors.
Annoying rear view mirror which makes it look like everyone is tail gateing you.
Electric windows can't be operated unless key is in ignition.
is
Thats about the lot for me,don't get me wrong though,it is still a decent car and my missus loves it.
I just prefer old skool

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...
