I know where there's a healthy one that needs a new home - and I know for 100% definite it will mate up to all the other bits you've bought off me very nicely

Gem, I want to do it myself as always fancied having a go but appreciate the offer thanks!

Oh just noticed your previous post, I don't know what shade of blue it was but I wish it was still silver !

Well, I made some very slow progress yesterday as I had been out for beer Friday night it had taken its toll on my mental and physical health....

I basically got the dash out, tidied up my garage and practised with the welder

The car and dash board out.... There is the start of some rot in the corner under the windscreen, it is hard to get the grinder in there I can tell you, even with a 75mm diameter knot brush!

Bought some tools to help me...
Image

My bro liberated a couple of panel skins for me from his work for practising and to use as repair panels
Image

Dash board out
Image

A grim tale under the sound proofing.... not looking forward to sorting those brackets out in that corner but will give it my best shot
Image

Quick sweep up in the passenger footwell (oh dear  )
Image

Then had a go at setting the welder up and attempted to make a ”agood weld”a, I know its not quite right yet but for my first go I was quite pleased. Just need to get it so there are less gaps between the beads in the weld etc but it is going in the right direction!
Image

Anyway, I’m under strict instruction today, no work on the car..... (urgh  )

Comments welcome
:D

Good luck with this mate! I have one of those glovebox brackets out of my E30 lying about if you want a replacement for the fooked one in the photo. Wouldn't want ought for it - just what it would cost to post.

Well, I’ve been getting stuck into projects that I have round the home since the last update but this afternoon I had about 4 hours attack on this with my brother in law who was a massive help, and motivational driving force for me!

Started off by unclipping everything and completely removing the wiring loom, Looking at what had to be done it just looked too much effort to cut and weld with all that in the way so took a brave decision to free this from the car....

Time to mark up and cut out the rot..... It’s not until you cut it out you realise how tricky it will be to cut/fabricate/weld new metal in, as it is so bloody awkward to get to!
Image
Image

Have bent the glovebox hinge mounting bracket stud thing out of the way and will tack it back down after, this way I know it will be in the correct position (or thats theory anyway lol)

Set to smacking an old Vauxhall Vivaro panel about with a hammer over a couple of bricks (all technical stuff) Got to thank my helper with this as he was well into it and hardly gave me a look in beating it about!!

Then fired up the mig, had a little go at the first of many repairs! Quite pleased with how it turned out! Just need to make a little rectangle to go in the gap left and use a dremel/file to make the wiring loom grommet hole the same shape as the grommet.

Had to be somewhere else by this point so project halted for now.
I am dead pleased with what we achieved in a few hours and it just goes to show if I can do it, anybody can trust me!!!!!!

Can't explain how satisfying it is, finally putting something in the car because all I have done up to now is strip it out!

Roll on the next chunk of spare time !

grabbed an hour after work tonight so I ran a bead round the panel from the the cabin side.

Also gave the outside the flap disc treatment and coated it in zinc primer for now. It's hard to get a flap disc in there to grind it flat so I think I need to invest in a little belt sander after a tip from beardymat.

Starting to get a bit better with the welder but its still quite tricky as this is my first ever go.

wish I could have a full week working on it but that aint gonna happen unfortunately

Thats more rot! I can't get it with my angle grinder as its too tight! I am going to have to take it out with a dremel/belt sander its the most awkward place you could ever find corrosion! It has just expanded from what was the point where the wiring loom came through the bulk head.

I'll give it my best shot thats all I can say and Lee mate I'm sure yours isn't this bad dude.

cheers for the comments

it's fast becoming aparant almost all E30's have grot in the bulkhead , even some of the nicest one's are festering away under the insulation :(
it's a sad job to try and do a quick fix with the dash/loom and engine still in there, and this is the only way to get in properly IMO

well done fella not many would have braved this, it's always good to see early cars being given some attention :D
