Spent ages researching tyres (205/55/R15), deciding finally that Uniroyal Rainmasters were the way to go at about 60 quid a pop.

Went around several tyre places today: "Sorry sir, not much call for that size of tyre these days." Very little choice; crap budget stuff or 80 sheets per tyre for Continentals, which I don't like.

Frustrating! Who does a decent range at a good price for 205/55/R15s? Any suggestions welcome.

There is a similar thread in Techincal Help at the moment. For my money the best tyre for reasonable cash for an E30 are Vredestein Sportacs. My last set cost me £200'ish about 4 years ago but I expect they're a bit pricier now.

Thanks, but even though I know what brand I want, I can't seem to find anyone who sells them in 205/55/R15!

You must be joking! My 3.0lt custom M52 E30 wears nothing else. They are brilliant. Only tyre that keeps it in any kind of check!

You need your pressures up a bit I reckon.

when i got my car it had bridgestone potenzas on it and the car felt really good on them. didnt get much tyre roll on them and were good in wet and dry. the proxes are grippy wet and dry but in comparison to the potenzas the car feels vague at high speed and the tyres roll a lot when pushing it in corners. I have tried a few different tyre pressures up to the max pressure rateed on tyre and am still not happy with them.

I buy whatever tyres i want online, and get them fitted balanced etc for £15.00 a corner at my local part worn tyre place. been doing it for me for years now.

Main larger tyre place won't do it but smaller ones will, just give them a call and ask.

Potenza's are a very good tyre, never had them on an E30 though, but they are pricey. Toyos from my experience are the best tyre i've had on an E30. Putting them up to the max pressure is only going to make things a whole lot worse, what pressures do you generaly run?

I have bolt in valves and stick on weights. Costs more for them to unbolt the valves, check and clean then, then bolt them back in, and the sick on weights cost more too.

Black circles is not too bad on price but you can get cheaper. T1-R's are about £75 a corner on black circles i think you can get cheaper by shopping around.

If you can find a decent small independent tyre outfit shopping around with Camskill/Blackcircles etc is a waste of time.

I Did just that last year, phoned around, went online, got the cheapest price I could find on 2 Tyres for my Golf GTi via Camskill - found a small independent who said he would fit & balance them for £10 each but asked if he could quote for the tyres - which he did - and the price was the same overall taking into account what I would have had to pay for delivery and then the hassle of waiting in for couriers - so all I had to do was turn up.

Will still check online first next time but sometimes "doing it yourself" is a mugs game when you take into account the time and fecking around involved.

Try it 8)

The correct size tyres are available, although the price is now starting to creep up as less and less demand is seen by the suppliers/manufacturers.

Bear in mind that tyres are still made and available from specialist suppliers for things like vintage pre-first world war cars, right up to modern classics like '60's and '70's metal.

Current specialists include www.longstonetyres.co.uk and www.vintagetyres.com ,as our 205/55 15's start to fall into the area of low demand, these specialists will be able to come to our rescue and source manufacturers who are prepared to make low volume runs.

Snag,as always, will be the price we will be expected to pay!
