As the subject heading suggests - I have a C2.5 Touring which too my ears sounds too tappetty. This is especially noticeable at low road speeds 30-40 mph / 2000 -3000 rpm (probably due to the absence of exhaust noise / road noise / wind etc!).

I've had a recent Service II with tappet adjustment (by a BMW specialist) - which hasn't improved matters.

Any suggestions before I go back and look a fool pestering my local specialist???

same thing happened to me, The (specialist) took my money with no improvment!!.
I assumed that when you book your car into a specialist they should be aware that these engines are prone to top end noises once the mileage goes into 6 digits ,they then relieve you of Ԛ£70 and advise you the cam lobes are worn !!!! causing the excess noise.

As in my case, i had a new cam fitted along with rocker adjusters, whilst the head is off it was skimmed & fitted with new valve stem oil seals, now finished its a massive differance almost like new, but at a cost of nearly Ԛ£1000 so unless absolutly essential stay with the noise whilst the shock sinks in !!!!!!!!!!!

Strictly speaking, the rockers aren't adjustable, but the valve clearances are.
If you're fairly handy with the spanners, you can do the job yourself (replace the camshaft, rockers and obviously head gasket) for less than Ԛ£400 and give the car a major service into the bargain.

I did my own (twice, but that's a different story) and I'm only really a good DIY'er - no expert.

go on - have a go.
