hi guys
i've just come off a driving ban and have bought an E30, my fourth over the years. i did a cursory check on insurance quotes before i bought it and it came back as about £1200 a year - i can just about justify £100 monthly. so i have bought a car and pick it up in a week and the insurance is now coming out as £1850... so it is a no go unless someone here has some ideas.
i was banned for failing to provide and they threw the book at me - i was only just over the limit (yes i know i shouldn't have driven anyway, and i have dealing with it for 3 years without a license)... if i had taken the breath test I would only have got a year and would now be able to insure the car.
any ideas on specialist very dirty license insurance and/or classic? i tried adding my mum to a quote and it actually raised the premium.
i'm 39, no no claims, car parked on the street - the car is a 325i 4 door switchable auto on an H plate.
if i can't do this then the car will be up for sale in a week or so.
if anyone wants to say anything nasty then please don't - i'm looking for advice here and have already spent far too long regretting what was a stupid thing to do.
PM if you'd prefer or we can chat on the phone - just need some advice / help.
cheers,
rich

Can only suggest that you trawl the specialist brokers, your age will be in your favour to help cancel out the other bits.

Try performance direct. From the reviews I've read, they seem to be cheap, but you pay a big penalty if you try and change cars or cancel during the year's insurance. (as a result they get a 1.5 / 5 rating on the review site I looked at) but most of this seemed to be down to complaints where people took out the insurance and then 2 weeks later sold the car and wanted to get their money back.
In the reviews I read they were one of the only insurers I've ever seen get plus points from people when it came to making claims.
Not sure if they'll fit the bill for you, I plan to switch to them next month as they are 50% the renewal quote I got from Chaucer.. But at £200 I can afford to pay for the year and assume I'll never get any of it back..
Hope it helps..

Second suggestion for performance direct, here. I think I got my insurance with them through Be Wiser. Any insurance company that you already have dealings with (house / property insurance for instance) may be a source of a deal.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

he best quote was with tesco surprisingly, and i do have other policies with them which is why i tried them.
so the e30 will go and be replace by a ford ka - oh the shame!!
Performane direct or give adrian flux a go, they may supprise you.
Tesco Value Insurance is always pretty cheap regardless.
always try sky insurance on here, they may not since you had a ban but its worth trying.

But if this enables you to re-build your reputation within the insurance world then the sacrifice will be well worthwhile.

The most valuable thing you can do is actually phone the companies up and speak to a real person. Make a note of your lowest prices, get the 'rival' insurance companies to fight for your custom. It may just be how it's worked for me, but deals seem to be more available on Fridays / Saturdays. It may be the lack of target - hitting by insurance monkeys sharpens up their deal - brokering skills.

just insured my 318is, and premiums arew on the up everywhere, and from what i gather speaking to them/classic insurers and read on here, companies are not too keen insuring bmw`s over 2.0 at the moment and high prises, maybe sell it and get an e30 below 2 litres for a bit to build your way back up

it's the E30 itself which is the issue, i've had quotes on a 318iS and that comes back about £50 cheaper... it's a Ford Ka for me.....polsta wrote:just insured my 318is, and premiums arew on the up everywhere, and from what i gather speaking to them/classic insurers and read on here, companies are not too keen insuring bmw`s over 2.0 at the moment and high prises, maybe sell it and get an e30 below 2 litres for a bit to build your way back up

ermmmm maybe, PM me some more info - is that OK?m8782538 wrote:If you can wait a couple of months (once i have my E30 on the road) you can have my little run around cheap (1.3 suzuki swift 5 door).
Havn't read the whole post so sorry if it's been mentioned/tried.
I'm back on the road in September after 14 months and (yeah I know it's a big age difference) but I put my mother as a second driver and it dropped my quote by a grand. May be worth putting an older lass on it?

I'm with lancaster on a classic policy mate - £250 for the year - but I had to ring them to discuss as when my renewal came through they had made some assumptions that pushed the premium up massivley.
Best advise I have seen is from beemerbird - speak to them on the phone - the comparison sites make too many assumptions that can impact your premium.
My mum had a ford Ka - it was okay...

and i don't have a problem with a Ka, it is the one small car that's cheap, quite good and OK to look at i think - it's just not a 325i !
cheers.

im 20 with 6 points for IN10 (uninsured) in august '08.
on e30 316 most of my quotes on comparison websites came out around the 1800 mark, i fiddled around with the excess and other bits like milage etc etc, got lucky and ended up with a quote for £723 which is bloody good for me i think.
have a play you might get lucky.

Have a look at this. I especially recommend the 'job picker' free tool. Bit of an eye opener.
