I've now resorted to putting a sign in the window saying NOT for sale.

Anyone else have a problem with this?

Bloody pikeys...

I may get a show plate printed up to stick in the window winkeye bloody frustrating. If it were for sale It wouldn't be on my drive I'd have sold it already, it would have a for sale sign on it, and I definitely wouldn't sell it to any random jippo who knocked on the door...

It's not all bad, I was cleaning my old motorsport ready to take some pics for auto trader etc when someone pulled up and offered me exactly what I was gonna put it up for.

used to get this a lot when I had a red sport one of the reasons it was replaced by a more subtle car. Funnily enough I have never had to advertise any of my e30's they have always sold by word of mouth which is nice but then they were all over maintained cars not the rubbish you so often find at the end of a long journey to go and view a car.

"Yeah mate, asking six grand for her." - usual response. If they go for it, quids in. If not, no harm done.

I was thinking about doing that. Thing is I'm rarely in when they knock, so my mates are getting annoyed!

Still annoying when it's not for sale. I mean yeah it's a compliment but it's annoying that they're nearly always a pikey.

I am rather bemused by the fact that you assume that anyone who is interested in your car is either a 'pikey' or 'jippo' (your words). Is your car a rusty old knacker, only good for the weigh bridge?

No but generally people who look like they've pulled their clothes out of a dumpster and spell of urine are known as pikeys. Then again, it does tend to be Taunton in general :P

thing is- all depends, how many people on here/mechanics/car people, would look what could be decibed as "pikey" in grubby/dirty old clothes, when they have spent/spending the day messing about with their car and parts and down the garage/out front

when im messing about with my car,i always chuck on my "car" clothes, which are old jeans and some covered in oil and paint etc, and would no dbout look like a "pikey" in the middle of a car sorting afternoon, and in nipping to halfords or whatever , said person sees your car and knocks the door... hes hardly going to think oh i look a bit grubby il go home and change quick

I trace my family history back a few generations to my Great Grandfather and I'm looking at authentic Romani gypsies from Russia who travelled over in the early 1900s to avoid anti-Semitic attacks. I am in no way insulting travellers or gypsies.

The terms 'Pikey' and 'Jippo' as I used them are provocative terms aimed towards those of a lower social status and are usually used to describe one who is dirty and ill-kept. They are used entirely in humour and light-heartedness.

By all means anyone who is dirty does not fall under this category, but when you look and smell like you haven't showered in a good few weeks and start a conversation with "Oi you" there is a slight difference.

but how do you expect someone to look whos has been cleaning and messing around with a car all day ? i know when im on it with my car, il have an old pair of jeans covered in crap, a t shirt same, with prob a couple of holes in it, and a pair of old trainers, but thats why ive got it on-coz im messing about with my car getting covered in crap and rolling round on the floor or under an engine bay, which lets face it most people who messing about with cars look the same- which then in turn is most likeley the sort of person whos going to knock your door asking if your old e30 is for sale

Shades of Thora Hird in 'Last of the Summer Wine'.....

The episode where Wesley entered the matrimonial home and Thora placed sheets of newspaper for him to walk on,then held an entire newspaper up when he went to prop himself up on the door frame.....

My late mother and my wife roared with laughter at a 'shared' experience!

The guys who usually knock on the door are with their girlfriends on the way back from the shops with bags, usually. As said, I am in no way saying anyone with work clothes falls into the category described.

I care a little bit more. I hate seeing molested e30s so if I were to ever sell my car I'd want it to go to someone who'd look after it.

The people who have knocked have walked past again often whilst I am outside working on it and asked me a second time.

Had that a lot over the years too with various cars. Always been tempted to say a ludicrously high price to see if they are still keen lol

I had a 205 Rallye a year or so back that got a fair bit of interest, but not as much as the e30. People nearly trip up while staring at it as they walk down my street

Not worth it. People just get shirty. What they actually are hoping for is that you don't know what you've got and will let it go for peanuts.

I had a nice Suzuki RGV250 and some chap strolled up and asked if I would sell it. Sure I said, for XXX amount of money, which was about double what it was really worth, and he got all shirty calling me all kinds of names, wanting to rip him off etc.

I've only been asked if I'd sell the E30 once via a note on the screen (over here they're just old cars, nothing really sought after) but I didn't reply.

the bit i don't like is folk leaving notes under a wiper arm asking if the car is for sale while the car is parked-up because you know they have been on your private land/driveway and also gave the car a good once over!
ive had folk in work ask, had contractors come looking for me in work to ask, past owners asking to buy it back & many passing peeps ask when i'm either cleaning or working on my E30, best one ever was when i collected my E30 from it's last MOT and the garage owner put a blank cheque in front of me and say's "how much cash do i write on this to get that car off you?" i just answered no amount will take my E30 from me :D

The current high price of fragfeed (£145 per ton) is no doubt encouraging this sort of activity.

I wouldn't take it as a compliment if a so-called "Gyppo" or "Pikey" type enquired if my classic BMW was for sale.

I also require to make it clear that I havent offered to buy Ian's car back. Which previous owner did? The one before you?

I think you guys are taking this a bit over the top. I used a word in a context that you have clearly misunderstood. All I was implying was that they were a 'skanky' kind of person. I apologise profusely that I upset anyone.
