Im not sure why you traded your 540i for the 1 Series - especially if you are in a position to buy a 22K car - the dealer would have given you buttons for it... Surely you would have been better off keep the 540i as a weekend fun car, and have the best of both worlds ?

Well buddy the situation is this.......
I have owned my 540 for over two years now and as i drive over 1500 each week and the fuel is costing me in the region of £900 per month and to top that off the 540 has 200k miles on the clock and is starting to over heat a bit(waterpump/or head gasket??)how much can i afford spend on it and for how long??.
So i have bitten the bullet and got my-self a reliable and econimic car with a no service's to worry about (in in package)no mots-and cheaper road tax...and its a BMW!!!!!!..........and i've still got the e30 in the garage for the weekends>>

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Spot on.capri_rob wrote:To get the £22k this new turd cost you will have had to earn over £30k - which you then spend on an "asset" that will lose circa 50% of its value over the next 3-4 Years.
Now there's financial planning for you![]()
On the flipside if people didn't buy new cars I wouldn't be able to pick them up for buttons 10 Years later when they still have plenty of life left
Why own a depreciating asset?
OK my 328 costs more to fuel than a modern diesel but at zero depreciation (seen values nowadays?), plus cheaper servicing (no need to keep up the main dealer history), and insurance then I can afford a bit more go juice.
If I want to save money, I'll just stick to the legal limit for a bit - average 40.2 MPG from Northampton to Coventry two weeks ago.
To be fair if I had 200K on the clock and a few problems I would change my car doing 1,500 a week. But at 78,000 p.a then a 22K car will be worth buttons at 2 yrs 150K miles?
If you get paid mileage at goverment rates that would easily cover the cost of the car though.

Duh. If you bought at tidy E36 316 or 318 for £1000, with zip to pay every month, your mileage rate would put money in your pocket, not the BMW dealer's pocket.
I assume you didn't tell them you'd be doing 1500 miles a week in it or you're planning to visit the local digital mileage correction outfit?
Really, why do I bother?
Enjoy your new car, or rather enjoy paying for the depreciation on somebody else's car while you use it.

You would have been better blowing £300 a month on dancing dust.
I do love your threads though. You make me feel intellectual.

Hmmm, and what would the PCP (Select) payments be on a 116d with an annual mileage of 75'000 miles be then? 1500 miles a week, 6000 a month and allowing you 2 weeks off that's 75k a year. At 2 years old the car would be worthless. Your monthly figures - assuming BMW Finance would even wear that mileage - would be well over £750 a month.

But surley if you wanted an oil burner to save money why not go for a e39 530d? It would made more sense to me as you have a bloody good return on mpg and I understand the things goes like stink too! Also you would have space and comfort in the 5er , where as the 1 seris is not the nicest of places to be ( well the 3 and 5 doors )

It's his money and his choice so just let him be happy. So the 116 diesel isn't your favourite choice of car for money. Who cares if the cars is gonna depreciate in a few years at least he enjoyed the moneyjann wrote:You are deluded to pay 22k for a 116d...
