Last October I was lucky enough to be given my bosses 1989 BMW 316i E30, as at the time it needed quite a bit of work to pass its mot. Here's how it stood when I was given it...

Image

Work started straight away on getting it back road worthy, the shell and bodywork were generally in pretty good condition, but a bodged repair job of the rear arches needed quite a bit of welding work. While it was in my friends bodyshop I called in a favour for a little paintwork and had the chrome window / grill surrounds blacked. Followed by fitting some 40mm FK lowering springs.

It took me a couple of months to decide what to do with the car. I've always been a fan of the jap scene, and fancied doing something a little different to the norm swaps (although it seems to be getting more and more common now). So after a few recommendations I left it in the capable hands of Slide Motorsport
I wish I had the know how to get more involved with the swap but it seemed a better idea leaving it to the professionals, although it's something i'm hoping to get more involved in in the future.

Here are a few pics from the swap.

While Slide were busy with the conversion I start buying some new goodies.

16" Compomotive TH Mono's -
Image

Rear brakes - 2 x 280mm rear discs from a BMW Z1, 2 x E30 M3 rear calipers (38mm pistons) and carrier brackets, 2 x Goodridge braided stainless steel hoses and EBC Yellowstuff pads.

Image

Front brakes - WMS 4 pot brake kit, will take some decent pics soon.
  • ACT organic clutch
  • Blitz induction kit
  • Apex short shifter
  • HKS adjustable actuator
  • Braided oil and water feeds
  • Boost guage, and water / oil temp guage
  • Cat 1 Viper alarm

I picked the car up a couple of weeks ago, and its been back to the garage for a few tweaks, but other than that everything went impressively smooth. It's currently running about 8psi of boost and i'm loving the power :D Power wise i'm guessing it should be around 220ish bhp at the moment, but i'm sure the standard diff and rear section of the exhaust are restricting it somewhat. BIG shout to Slide though for doing such a great job, really would recommend them to anyone in a similar position.

Here's a few pics of how it looks now...

Insurance was a challenge with only being 21, but have managed to fully insure it with all mods declared thanks to a very helpful Adrian Flux :)

The tacho stopped working after a couple of miles, thanks to advice from Theo have managed to sort out the new resistors but it's still not working yet, think something must have blown when running it originally.

Looking forward to the summer and hopefully meeting a few people at shows. There's plenty more planned for the car in the meantime including a full exhaust system, uprated fuel pump, new spark plugs, more boost, coilovers etc so i'll try and keep the thread as up to date as possible, and hopefully get some better pics when the weather picks up.

thanks for all the comments guys :D

Still trying to decide what to do bodywork wise, the front valance is a little rusty, not sure if it's worth the repair so trying to decide whether to upgrade bumpers to the mtec ones or keep with the original look ones and just get them in mint condition for shows..hmmm!

Parts wise, probably 2.5k - 3k, but I have quite a few uprated parts like the clutch, braided turbo lines, bigger alloy rad etc.. I imagine you could do it quite a bit cheaper on a budget. Labour wise, if it's something you're interested in contact Slide - http://www.slidemotorsport.co.uk as they mentioned putting together a parts / labour kit for the same conversion :)

It's a great choice engine wise, massive tuning ability! Driving at normal comfortable speeds you wouldn't have a clue what was under the bonnet but put your foot down and the pull is impressive even on low boost!

Cheers Theo! The power is addictive so no doubt I will do soonish. Need to sort handling first really, standard 316 suspension feels a little shocked at times haha.

Do you have any suggestions LSD wise? Would prefer one that'd be better for track / road but think the standard diff is really holding back the acceleration at the moment.

I've got a 3.91 LSD on my car which is really only used on track, I can hit the rev limiter in 5th without any difficulty (150mph). Previously I had a 3.64 which was too long for my liking - my advice would be to get a 3.73 or 3.91 medium case (the larger of the two e30 differential sizes) LSD.

If you have a standard 316i diff it will be a very high ratio 4.27 (i think) so fitting one of the diffs I suggested would actually give you longer gearing and slightly reduced acceleration.

Thanks! I'll have to stop blaming the diff then winkeye
Think exhaust is top of the list but LSD will be next purchase.

Looking really good Oli, I like! 8)

BTW, give Gareth a buzz if you're after the "perfect diff", he's doing loads of them these days.

good stuff, very interesting! I can't really work out from the pictures, how close is the brake fluid reservoir to the turbo?

It's quite close, decided to use the 200sx master cylinder and servo, but it does have two heat shields. If it ever causes a problem when I go bigger power then it can be moved a few inches over, but seems fine for now :)
