I don't get it though.

OK every day running costs are less with a brand new warrantied oil burner, but unless the car was a straight swap, how does the purchase price and depreciation save you money over the 18mpg thirst of the 540?

This is such a common mistake people make,I'd much rather shovel fuel into some decent metal than have some kind of new Blue Motion turd on my driveway.
Now that I can afford a Blue Motion,my 5 is blue, thats close enough.

You'd be better served with £500 of 318.. Luckily much better on fuel than higher spec models, such as M3's. :)

this is nothing against you, it just happens to have bought something that's been nagging me to my attention.

How the hell can BMW put a 'sport' tag on a frigging 116 diesel.

really. come on, you can do better than that fellas
cheers,

A 116D would out drag a 318iS no problem, E30 or E36.

the sport does not refer to anything to do with engine.......(although it s alot quicker than my e30 320!!!!)I belive its to do with the trim level..seats-wheels etc... :D

that's not the point, a modern golf gti would outdrag an e30 m3. times move on, cars get quicker, but the sportier ones should too.

as far as i know a 116d is the lowest diesel in the range, how 'sporty' can you make one? different wheels, bumpers and some earplugs to drown out the diesel din?

proper 'sports' should be a more fun to drive version of a decent car, pitched a bit bellow the proper full fat M versions.

318is has never been given the 'sports' tag, the 325i sport was, and the e36 328i sport.

it's just another example of tacking on a badge to sell a few more vehicles to the easily influenced. i know all manner of other manufacturers have been doing it forever, but i don't approve of those either :D
cheers,

I have to say that lashing out £22G on a depreciating asset (with a sharp depreciation curve too) to save a few quid a month on your fuel bill seems a bit daft.

It'll do in £4000 pa at least in depreciation. Call it £330 PCM that's over 50 gallons of unleaded or 700 miles. That's just to pay for the depreciation. You'll need to fuel it too.

With that sort of grasp of economics, you really should be in the Treasury.

To get the £22k this new turd cost you will have had to earn over £30k - which you then spend on an "asset" that will lose circa 50% of its value over the next 3-4 Years.

Now there's financial planning for you

On the flipside if people didn't buy new cars I wouldn't be able to pick them up for buttons 10 Years later when they still have plenty of life left :D

I am fully aware of all the marketing bull and BMW's perchant for offering M- Sport and Sport levels of trim on any old model.

I just felt like pointing out that a 116d has better performance than some older sporting models. What do you think the "S" in 318iS stands for and no its not "slow" despite what some of the galvaniser bashers would have you believe.

The "Sport" level of trim on E8x 1 series models isn't even that sporty TBH, no M tech anything just a few options, some 17" alloys and a "sports" steering wheel.

M-Sport trim on the other hand has the usual M tech, steering wheel, knob, body kit, black headlining, suspension and sports seats.

In M-Sport trim, a fun car to drive with enough performance (even in 116d form) to be entertaining enough.

I happen to know one other owner of a 116d - he is a 58 year old accountant
As I get older I realize that you can't please everyone - pissing everybody off is however a piece of cake

Ok so some people like the security of having a warranty but if you r planning on buying a new car to keep for a good few years it just don’t make sense.

If you look at some of the earlier 1 series they can be picked up for as little as £2500 and there only what 6 years old.

The first few years of ownership are the most expensive in regards to deprecation so overall running costs wise you’re much more out of pocket than you actually realise in both the short and long term.
22k on the used market could have brought a little diesel hatch of some sort as a daily driver and a crazy old M5 of some sort as the weekend hack.

If your one of those people who likes the exclusivity of a new car then fair play to you but my advice sell it quick you may wake up one morning and realise your £22k car is now worth £10k, the early 1 series can be picked up for a s little as £2500 and there only what 7 years old?

Just my 2 cents but in fairness to you if you have the 1 series coupe is a nice looking motor especially in white, almost seems like a modern day take on the old E30 in some ways.

A sub £500 e36 318i would be my choice. Scrapyard running costs in an ultra reliable car. IF you can spanner a little. You won't find a cheaper BMW to run as a daily overall.

50MPG don't matter a wank when your losing £300 in depreciation a month. Buys lots or scrapy trinkets that does!

You will not get a 1 series for £2500 unless its been smashed or smashed and repaired badly.

You might get lucky at the auction and bag one for £3500 though but this will be a 05 plate 116i with manual air con and cloth.

This is an irrelevant statement, I doubt very much he is about to drop 22 bags on the counter at his local dealership, these types usually sign up to a monthly drain of their bank account for the next x amount of years and misery every time they check out their online banking which gets closer and closer to the red
