anybody have any tips for taking the chrome window strips off without causing any damage?

just heat / wrap it, or use black tape

If you mean the strips on the outside, strip and rubber come off together. The strip is held on with friction clips.
Remove the mirror then workkng carefully and slowly with a soft (pine) timber wedge and mallet, tap upward working backwards and fowards.
