I remember a long time ago someone outlined what they did to rust proof their touring bootlid but I cant find the thread anywhere!

I have a spare bootlid that I plan on stripping down, glass out and everything else of it.

What is the best way forward to make sure it won't rust again?

Main problem with the touring tailgate is water getting into the channel just under the glass.I reckon that BMW were going to mount the glass in a rubber seal, then changed their mind and bonded it instead!

I have replaced the rubber seal with black silicone,so far I have had no water get in.For an OEM look,I have read that zoner's have set the stock rubber seal with silicone.

Other area is the point where the skin is turned over the frame, the lower edge seems prone to rot for some reason.

Yeah the lower edge above the plate has started to rot nicely on my own, most of the edges have started actually. Have bootlid that on inspection looks like it hasnt started to rot yet, will see once it's stripped how bad it is.

So silicone the lower glass edge and push the plastic strip back in.

Any idea how to get the glass out of the lid?

Frankly,no!

It's bonded in,so at a guess you need to cut the bonding agent somehow and clean the remains off.

I looked at saving a tailgate glass some time back when I swapped a very rusty one for one that was not as bad,but decided it was not worth the effort involved!
