I also want you to give me the wire colours (exact!) coming into the rectangular C101 plug from the body side. Make sure you get the pin numbers right. You will find them on the plug face but will need good eyes to make them out! I just want to check that the body loom wiring is the same for the injected version as for the carb version as i dont have a carb version wiring diagram.

Another thing you will have to do to convert the motor to an injection one is change the fuel tank for one which has the swirl chamber around the fuel pump. The carb tank doesn't have one.
I will have a look on Saturday (my next free day) for the wires etc.

Also mate, I am running a 55L non swirl chamber tank on my M42 (in the avatar) and am having no probs what so ever. I will prob need an "in-tank" pump and sender and the wiring for it but will have to check both of my cars and see if the 85 has the standard loom in place.

I had already thought of this but think I will be ok.

I will see how I get on with that.
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

In your pic, the engine->body loom plug is under the plastic cover on the rhs of the fuse box. Mating a later motor loom to it is simple. Get a spare body loom C101 plug, cut the retangular plug off the existing body loom plug and join the wires inside the fuse box.

I am at work so dont have my wiring diagram for the older 316 like your at hand but can post up the conversion later if you require it. Will need to know what motor you intend on putting in though.
When you say right hand side you mean right hand side of the pic or right hand side if you were sat in the car?

Excuse my stupid questions, I'm learning :)
Before the zone shuts does anyone know the answer to my question ? cheers

This is the C101 plug (sorry some pics are blurry, crap camera and getting dark)
Alternator is cable is blue both sides, alot of pin sockets are empty and some that are used are going to unconnected connectors engine side. I guess this is a very basic poverty spec engine. There is NO CHECK PANEL.

This may be a stupid question but can you easily replace the C101 plug with say on of these...

If I use the car body side surely I can just attach the new engine loom to it? Cut from E36 loom at the scrap yard.
There are a lot of connectors unused on the engine loom, a hell of a lot! I am guessing that this was a universal loom maybe for perhaps injection cars? I know one must be an electric fuel pump which the M10 carb doesn't have.

Willnz I really don't know what to do with it, do I need a secondary fuel pump loom if wiring an M42 or M50 or will there be one on the car I could use if I have the in tank pump/sender unit? Am I missing anything ? Also, when you say join the wires in the fuse box what do you mean, whic wires?

Many thanks.

Looking at your diagram I have (Starting at alternator going roughly clockwise):

D+ - Alternator - BLUE
15s - Power supply with ign on (fuse protection) - YELLOW/GREEN stripe
50 - Power while starting - BLACK (small) & BLACK/YELLOW stripe
15u - Power with ign on (fuse unprotected) - GREEN
OL - Oil Pressure - BLACK/BROWN stripe
SI - Service ind reset - WHITE/BLUE Stripe
EP - Electric fuel pump - PURPLE/RED stripe
FT - Coolant temp transmitter - PURPLE small

This is all car body side, I can provide engine loom side if required?

Can they be joined outside the fuse box? Why inside the box, is there a reason?

This is very cool though, if I use my IS motor I can take the body plug as well. Another stupid question but can the wires be easily removed from the plug and soldered? into place in another (X20 or equivalent) plug?

Thanks Will.

RE; the tank, as stated previously I have a non-swirl chamber carb tank on my IS (this is a 55L single top hole) and it works fine. Not sure about the other way round and not sure if there is more chance of me running out of fuel but it hasn't happened yet and the gauge works as it should.

Awesome though, appreciate this
