well naturally when you turn the heater on it brings down the operating temp of any normal running car
after all it is all linked
but when i had a split in my rad it was doing some strange things

maybe its worth replacing rad first then considering its a piece of piss compared to heater matrix pipes

cool
well maybe a few of the gang can look round it when you get to the Ace
a few heads under the bonnet might spot something
just out of curiosity how far does the needle go over into the red when you dont have the heater on

Mine had the same problem, so to find out what was the problem I joined the two pipes going in and out of the cooling system inside the cabin (pipes the go inside the cabin to the heater matrix that is). And voila, I discovered that the overheating problem disapeared...
To access the heater matrix all you have to do is strip the middle console and you can see the heater matrix pipes. Then decide where is the problem !
I hope this helps, it helped me !

Just a last tip - bleed the cooling system after you join the two pipes in case there is air in it...

You probably released the airlock in the process. Would probably have had the same result if you just connected the heater pipes up again.JOSEMI wrote:Mine had the same problem, so to find out what was the problem I joined the two pipes going in and out of the cooling system inside the cabin (pipes the go inside the cabin to the heater matrix that is). In my 320 they can be seen as soon as you take the middle section out on the left side, the pipes are of a white-brownish colour (probably produced by the hot water circulating in them). In my case they were cracked and flooding the cabin ! i bought them second hand in perfect state in ebay, although they shouldn't be 2 expensive in the stealers...

Something I've thought of that could do with repeating here.
Many years ago there was a recall for E30 cooling ststem pressure caps.
The problem was they became faulty and over pressureised the system, causing all sorts of leaks.
Remove your pressure cap, and check the centre disc right at the bottom is yellow, not black. If your's hasn't been changed then get yourself down to your dealer with your VIN, and you should get one FOC.

The problem in mine did originally start with a blown rad... air got in and the overheated water then blew the matrix heater... a nightmare of a week... check that yours is not leaking anywhere.
Also check that water reservoir in your car with regularity, water is a must to keep the engine cool
