As it happens we have two e39's in the family , my 540 and an older 528. The 528 is approaching 350,000 km and has cost us bushes brake pads and tyres over the last 8 years, it just keeps on going! So perhaps my e39 comments are a little unjustified! But in my defence mine was in the garage for oil leaks- rocker gaskets and crank seal- and it broke down on way back from garage, a new crank sensor and temp sensor later it is home and curently depositing it's steering fluid oh brand new driveway! Pipe from pump to box now leaking.
But I still love it!

E34's went to sealed for life in late 1995, so right at the end of the run. The 540i's were sealed for life (5HP30), but the others used Dexron 11 ATF and a gearbox oil change is on the Insp.11 service schedule - same for the E36 which used Dexron until the 323i/328i came out.B7 wrote: From roughly 91 on, the e34 gained a sealed for life box as well. Surprised me, when i went from my 90 G M20 525i to my 93 L M50TU 525i. Needless to say although it barely had 60k up it was booked straight into Cronks (as it was then) for an oil change on the box!
