Calling in at my favourite scrapyard next week(150 miles away), looking for a diff. for my M50 engined E30, with E36 (1:1 5th gear) gearbox.
Am I correct in thinking that old 5 series (early 80's to 88?) diffs fit, with an E30 rear cover?
Anyone know what models have what ratios, and if any had LSDs?

I think that the Manual 535 would be a good choice to go for. its 3.25, you will need to change the output flanges (they pull out easy and go back in) then you will also need to change the rear cover like you said. (535i upto 87 has LSD as stock) M5 has 3.73 LSD

just out of curiousity. i have a 535 lsd that i want to fit to my e30. but the rear cover is 7bolts and the e30 i have is 5 bolts. also the diff seems to be slightly longer. its also a 3.07 ratio, anyone know what car it may have come from. still has the tag on it.

Didn't some one say theres two sizes of dif on the E28 and the larger (535 ?) size doesn't fit the E30 ?

ive driven a m50 car-wil's, with both a 3.4 ratio open diff and now a 3.2 e30 m3 lsd like andy335touring has. the m3 e30 diff is ideal, get one while u can!!
