This has probably been asked and answered 100 times, but which bulbs give the purest white light without any hint of blue, is it 4300 or 6000? Cheers.

I've just bought a set from him, and I'm waiting for delivery. I'm not sure what happened to the shipping though. He sent me a tracking number within 48hrs but it didn't register on the HK Post Office website for two weeks.
I'll let you know when they arrive!

Well yes if you don't have projectors, as they will blind everyone. But projectors can cut a sign post in half with light from 200yrds easily.

I have heard that you need or will need (if the MOT thingy hasn't come in yet) electronically adjustable (or auto levelling) headlights and a wash wipe system.

Don't quote me on this, someone will he able to clarify, maybe Brian Mooooore?!

hids that are not factory fitted are illegal. most of the boxes will include a disclaimer to acknowledge this.
i.e. read the disco near the end of the ad in the following link-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/H4-H4-3-Bi-Xenon- ... 4cec24c1c5

off road use  lol

ive never had any run ins with the law though and ive had them on 3 cars for the past 5 years now. if you take the mick and put in something like 16k then youre asking for trouble, otherwise theyre an excellent upgrade :D

The current construction and use regs. state that new cars fitted with HIDs must have a levelling and cleaning mechanism, but makes no reference to HID systems fitted to cars when they are not new, so, at the moment at least, there is nothing illegal in the UK about aftermarket HID kits, so long as they give an acceptable beam pattern, do not have excessive chromatic aberration at the cut off point, and are not blue.
I have no knowledge of any new regulations in the pipeline.

Ive always been confused when it comes to HID's so this is good news to me :D

Thanx for all the advice :thumb:

here you go.....

"Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal. .... In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated".

one of the lads on the ukmk4 forum looked it up and sent a message to hella uk. (i have a golf aswell)

here is the link for you all to browse. its quite informative about the legality of hids...

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/116777/792458.aspx

Retro fit hids are not legal period(no dig brian im just clearing up the grey area that you pointed out about the car being new). ive used them and i am aware that they are not road legal unless fitted as standard new model motor or not. no e30 headlamp is going to be approved for hid fitment nor any other make for that fact unless theyre oem hid fitment - im which case you wouldnt be thinking about retro fitting them.

i also install them for some customers who come in with their own kits and every make from a-z has a disclaimer inside which i make them very clear to understand before i fit them to save hassle if they get pulled.

they are still a million times better than standards regardless :D

The above is the "view" of the DOT, which is not law. Under the strict interpretation of current law all HIDs are illegal, including those fitted to new cars, as there is no mention of them in the lighting regulations.
The 'e' mark bit, or lack of, is valid, but I can't see a successful prosecution being obtained for not using an 'e' marked bulb which otherwise meets all the requirements for an 'e' mark.
It probably is time that extra guidance is issued to MOT testers, so that most of the aftermarket non projector stuff on assorted chavmobiles gets failed on beam control grounds.

i can see anyone being done for lack of an 'e' mark either. i dont know anyone who has been pulled for using hids either, hence why i still use them. its not the law as such but its still down in writing. most coppers arent gonna ask you to pop your bonnet and check for 'e' marks anyway unless theyre bored, and even if they do, play dumb and ask them to do it as you dont know how - most cars are a ballache to remove a headlight bulb that most coppers wont want. lol :D
hids forever :? :D

I really can't see the cops getting excited unless it becomes an MOT fail. Anything more subtle than that is going to require effort in the courts.

Fitted the HIDs and am happy with them, the only thing is now the side lights are just a sad brown smudge. Is there a direct replacement that gives a more white light?

You can get brilliant white LED replacements to nearly match the HID's. Isn't it nice being able to see propely at night :D

Ebay is the cheapest place to get them.

if you want side lights get ring prism - part no led501w - halfrauds. go for the single led one not the naff 4 led ones as they always go wrong. having said that if e30s have twist in bulbs (not checked mine yet lol) i bought a single led set from ebay for about £4 for my old mr2. spot on. just stay away from multi-led lights theyre cack.
