saw some oil in the street outside my house, thought nothing of it untill i saw some again, but it was where i had just been parked. Didnt think much about it, sort it at the weekend. Just been out for dinner and parked front facing down hill in the street. Got back to the car to see a stream of thick dark stuff running down the hill, walk up to my car to realise its just emptied 4litres of oil on the tarmac. Luckly got a little in the boot so through it in a get home. Touch out look under car to see one ????ed sump.
Now i no what the thump was when i went over a speed hump this morning.

Are the sumps different on M20 M40 M42 engines?
Eurocarparts do one for Ԛ£60 but dont mention what engine, the cars a 318is M42.
I think there are pretty simple to replace, anyone have any tips please.

oooops
I think the M40 & M42 sump are the same
there is 2 sumps on these engines
an upper and a lower
you will obviously want the lower part

and dont forget the gasket too

Hi mate, the M20 is a six cylinder engine so the sump will be longer than the M40/42.

As for the M40/M42 sumps being the same I'm not 100% sure, but would imagine that they would be very simular.

I did the same on my 320i, heard a bang, one night, thought ill check it in the morning. Driving home the same night the oil light came on and by the time I got out the car (after all the swearing) I saw oil pouring down the road!
I then had to wait an hour and a half for the breakdown people while a police officer kept me company doing a check over my car!

Did exactly the same thing mate, 318iS too. I was told that the sumps are different for the M40 and M42's but they arent. I checked realoem.com and the part numbers are the same and they look identical.
