pac1982 wrote: the only reason I choose to drive a 318IS over a 325 is the fact that the running costs VS performance on the IS are reasonable but still not great, I would never want to pay the fuel bill for a 325 given the pathetic performance and extremely poor MPG it puts out, it’s not that I can’t afford to run a 325, I’m just not stupid and understand the value of money
A b25 is worth every penny more in fuel as its so much more fun to drive

an IS isnt a bad car but why the fook to people try to compare them with a 325i. not even in the same legue. there the legue below :)

As you can see nothing like Lexus lights in anyway shape or form, in fact they look more like E36 lights than anything else which I suppose is a crime in itself :o:

Im an i.S owner and the other day a white E30 convertable pulled up next to me at the lights, he rolled down his window and asked me if mine was a genuine i.S or was just badged up..told him and asked what his was and he said a 2.5 sport.. and a race to the next lights was on..

Light went amber we both floored it and trust me when i say i love my i.S, but the noise and the way his car pulled away was something else! he had me in every gear and did i mention the 6-pot howl?

The i.S is a great E30, but it just cant compare to a 2.5..plain and simple!

Cant wait to get my 3.5 sorted, then hope to meet him again :teehee:

The amount of mega high milage m20 engines on here is amazing. I only really know of Ratch's IS being in the same sort of leauge in terms of milage , and that has now died.

If you think a 325i is bad on mpg you should try an early C1 or C2 in my case , eye watering returns are common place when I go to the pumps.

My old engine in my IS had 165k, since been replaced by an 80k lump.

A C1 or C2 is worth the cost you have something truly rare and special to me a normal 325 sport is just another E30 turd.

Plenty of bmw engines do high mileage - my bro had a 200k IS, there were some getting around 250k on e36coupe a few years back, no idea these days. My m52b25 has 203k on it, has only ever in my fam's ownership (since 100k miles mb 8 yrs ago) had a water pump and rad, my bro's last m52b28 was approaching 150k, I've had loads of experiences of them being great, yet most on here - Dan, Andyboy etc keep going on about what scrap they are. I guess the point is its all v subjective.
Having said that, I much prefer the engineering in the m42, it is a much more modern design than the m20 and it shows. Not that there's anything wrong with the m20, just look at most parts, something as simple as the oil filter housing, or the timing chain, or the rods, or the crank, or the cyl head, or the exhaust manifold, the list goes on, all a nicer design on the m42.
The m42 compares well to other 16v engines of its era, andyboy mentions the XE, I'm convinced an m42 is easily its peer and has far fewer issues. Its a good engine, if not particularly exciting.
Totally agree on BMW's modern reputation being bolstered by the e30 325 and that they're a lovely car, that's not really what's being argued. I'd have either based on condition, they both have their fortes.

What I've been trying to say to this bunch of Nigel Mansells for years. These days it;s what E30 you can get in the right condition - even spec can be dealt with. Mint 316i or 325i rotbox?

As a standalone model, the iS is the pick.

The 318iS will always be the junior model, end of!

In Mark 2 Escort terms, the iS is the 1600 Sport compared to the RS2000. Slower, and worth about 1/3 of the real thing. :D

At the time that the E30 was current and for some time before and after, BMW was synonomous with straight six engines. In the public's perception a BMW was a premium brand with a six cylinder engine.

The only thing a 318is is has going for it is its cheap and easier on the fuel than an m20.

I will also say I don'nt think the m20 has a great lot going for it either other than the beautifull sound it produces. performance to mpg figures is poor but worth it just for the sound.

Regardless it still shits over a 318is all day long.

Standard B25with scorpion exhaust, and chipped 318is

b25 wins, last year i went against a 323ci Auto e46 and even that killed me

the biggest difference is the torque, If you put your foot down at 2500-300rpm in an IS it does nothing, a b25 will pull away pretty quickly once it gets to 3000rpm :D

ther both different cars you cannot compare them :)

1. Alex is an amateur and clearly cannot get off the line in a decent manner.

2. The Straight-line speed is an OLD and TIRED argument, outdated in current society as a test of the capabilities of a normal saloon car and not in any way an indication of anything useful in this argument.

I think some people are deluded :)

Just admit it Ratch. a b25 is better on the twistys too with its torque :)

Just fit 24v and be done with it ratch, thats what your car needs to make it complete :D
