Hmm. I still have the Blaupunkt Casablanca CM62 that I assume was original / dealer fit in my old '86 Chromie. Will have to take a picture for the records.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

Slightly off topic.. I have the full Harman Kardon setup from the E46 M3, minus the head unit.
As I have some troubles with being partially council already, is it council to use the speakers from the M3?
If I paired it with a period-correct head unit, do I get cool points back? Or is that then just a horrible bastardisation?
Opinions appreciated

As long as the speakers were in original locations behind standard grills then any speaker is fair game in my opinion.
I wouldn't waste my time used in the HK stuff out of an E46, its designed to work in the E46 speaker locations and tbh, aint all that.

I've heard mixed reviews myself.
My brother can use the speakers to great effect, regardless of position. He'll build transmission lines out of the subs and reposition the others as required. All retaining OEM fit.
Before you assume he'll make a pigs ear of it... he is perfectly aware of what he's up to
http://streetbassers.co.uk/index.php?op ... ic=5015.15
The only thing is, if the speakers are of inferior quality, there isn't much point in using them. I'll look into it properly. My brother saved them from an M3 years ago in case I wanted them. I suppose the owner was replacing them for a reason!

My '91 Touring came with a Pioneer KEH8300 fitted from new by Cheyne - I don't have pics, brochure, instructions or the actual HU - but it is detailed on a dealer invoice. I also have a letter from Cheyne to the original owner, apologising for the delay in getting his motor to him as they had been waiting for the new Pioneer catalogue! This was dated November '91 so possibly this HU was a '92 option?
I have a later (June '94) invoice for replacing O/S/F window, clean out broken glass and fit a KEH-M8000RDS radio cassette. Wonder what happened there then...?
Then in Dec '96 he had a Pioneer CDX-P610 multichanger fitted in the O/S rear cubby, which is still there, although disconnected and I have no idea if it works.
Also found this site when looking for pics, a bit clunky but might be useful, also has some manuals: http://retro-caraudio.servehttp.com/gui ... tures3.htm

I suspect he must have had the headunit changed again in '96 as the P series CD changers required a different lead than his KEH M8000RDS ran. Unless they used a BB92 conversion kit but they were rare.Mungo1337 wrote:My '91 Touring came with a Pioneer KEH8300 fitted from new by Cheyne - I don't have pics, brochure, instructions or the actual HU - but it is detailed on a dealer invoice. Coincidently, I have a KEH-M8000RDS in my loft which I ran in my car with a CDX-M30 CD changer before I swapped to an early P series kit (for the iPod set up).

Also, I saw an iS recently with an equaliser mounted in the bit behind the ash tray/underneath the heater controls.
Looked a bit like this but it was Blaupunkt (i think) with slide faders rather than knobs and used in conjuction with some equally retro looking head unit.

Really want one! Can anyone help?

Hmm I think you're right; I looked at the invoice again: it actually says"Fit Pioneer radio cassette unit & CD boot changer" then lists a Pioneer MCD-P430 for £459.95. Can't find any info on this model number on the net, but I'm guessing its the changer - and not the one still lurking in my rear cubby, which is a P610. The first owner must've supplied the head unit, as only the one item appears on the invoice.I suspect he must have had the headunit changed again in '96 as the P series CD changers required a different lead than his KEH M8000RDS ran. Unless they used a BB92 conversion kit but they were rare.
nice set-up btw

Would the info you get from BMW from the VIN number provide any hints as to what H/U was in the car when new as well?

I doubt it. As it was dealer fit, the spec list wouldn't show it as it didn't leave the factory with it.robbo86 wrote:Would the info you get from BMW from the VIN number provide any hints as to what H/U was in the car when new as well?

This stuff is all going a bit too far as it's a blatant step back for the sake of orignalty.
Why compromise?

Barry - you can NOT have wires hanging out the front of the thing - yuk!
I love that Pioneer DEH55CD - I'd rock that f anyone has one...?

Sorry Ratch, a Becker has no place in an E30.
Its a merc/porsche radio FFS!
Can you remove the pic of it from this thread please, it has no place here either.
How is it a step back? You can use an Ipod so thats good enough!

Am 99.9% sure that is dealer fit - had one in my F Plate 325i which had all the history and original bill of sale from new - am certain that was on the original dealer sales invoice.B7 wrote:Mo. What's the crack with the Becker Mexicos which were fitted to 80's Mercs, you know the ones which just have a screen along the middle and a row of buttons at the top and the bottom. They look the shizzle
This one is a Grand Prix I think

No, im sure Porsche used Beckers as well as Blaupunkts.
I think Pacers 745i has twin beckers but thats the only BMW i've seen or heard of with a Becker.

I always link Beckers to Mercs, Porsches, and later, Ferraris!
And i would like to stumble on a Becker of that era.
For me, Alpine, all the way:

Some can match the e30's amber lighting too!

my old man used to have a chromie BMW E30 320i (4-door) black B Reg and it had a Blaupunkt stereo with the key card feature which was supercool. Though i dont know what it had originally as he bought it second hand. The radio whatever it had then got nicked and replaced with the Blaupunkt stereo with the key card feature.
Lol i didnt realise putting a modern headunit and modern speakers was such as crime on a E30?

My '89 325 had a sony xr pull out head unit fitted in the dealer on pdi along with 4 sony speakers. Simple but sounds great even after all these years on tape or radio. Another observation, I've seen Becker head units in E30 M3 and E28 M5, cd players back in 87!!!!!!

so am i right when ordering e30 new in UK- for example, back in 1990, it was possible to choose only these aftermarket radios listed at the beginning of the thread, and no oem bmw radios like bavaria c, reverse rds etc. etc.?
