My take on the last couple of days

I have been a zone member since nearly when it started.I have taken from the zone,especially lately when doing my 3.2 conversion.I feel i have given back at the same time over the years.I still enjoy coming here and reading and posting to subjects.

I appreciate all that the mods do,and realise they are working for the good of the zone.I think also a few mods are sick of it aswell,thats why i think steve gave it up,arguments between mods possibly the cause of a few other mods leaving,im not sure.Now that its been handed over to Adam i hope he isnt trying to do everyting,that would explain his short rude replies which i have seen or maybe its just him,im not sure but i dont remember adam being like that before so maybe we need more mods to lighten the load on adam and the team,and maybe adam should try and spread his zone tasks etc out between the mods to lighten his work load here.

I dont agree with the new changes to the classifieds because of the reasons mentioned before my post and i think the answer is more mods and better policing of sections on the zone.Maybe one or maybe two or three mods should be allocated the responsability of looking after there own section on the zone and that would make it easier to moderate.You know what im getting at ?? there own turf to look after basically.

Lets hope we can sort all this out.

with regards to THEM and US........ No way folks, as the old saying goes theres no I in TEAM , the Zone exists in a symbiotic (sp?) relationship, staffers and members alike , neither can exist without the other so who is really to blame when things go awry ???

Rest assured the mods team is here for the good of all the site, we have a team so no one man/woman can dictate policy.

The requirement for new Mods is still a priority, the effect is twofold... less for each current staffer to worry about, and a bigger cross section of opinion with regard to decision making.

Why not bring back the old system and MODERATE it more strictly? thats all it needed.

I agree with pretty much all Simon has said here, in particular this quote.
I'm sorry if it offends anyone, but I agree that the Zone is under-moderated. I'm unsure how this issue could be addressed, bearing in mind that the Mods all give generously of their own free-time.
I've been a member for 19 months, my post count would have been 550 higher if the posts from the old Zone were carried over. Now, I know this is not a lot, but I have a business to run and a family who like me to be away from the computer from time to time. Surely length of membership is more important than post-count?
My feeling is that the Zone has become a victim of its own popularity. Since the membership has quadrupled, all the fun is rapidly draining out of the place and it has become very impersonal. If it wasn't such a mine of useful information, I don't think I'd bother coming on anymore.
I've always tried to only post when I've something constructive or relevant to say, hence only 1200ish posts in 19 months. It's the "knob jockey" posts that are spoiling the place.
I'd lay money that if a check was made on regular posters, there'd still only be about the same number as the old Zone finished with. ......And probably most of the flamers have lowish post counts or have only been members for a short while.
Perhaps we could have a larger team of mods to police the site better?? Over-moderated???? Surely that's better than having a one-man show - the Zone has got far too big for that. "Firm but fair" has got to be preferable to "anything goes". Even our wonderful Government is waking-up to that one!!
OK, so we need to allow a little more time for things to settle down...... But how long is long enough??

Thank you for all your comments and thank you 320Touring for creating a constructive discussion here. I will try and put a response to everyones comments here.

Adam, whilst I appreciate that you are the registered owner of the e30zone.co.uk, and as such "owner of the zone" I find your attitude towards subscribers somewhat shocking.

In my opinion, you state the e30 zone is the "UKs Largest E30 Community", yet you appear to treat the members like lower class citizens.

My recent attitude is probably due an apology to all members but allow me to explain briefly which may put a reason behind some of it although not excusable.

I have recently changed jobs, I used to have internet access at work so could keep an eye on the zone during the day. I now work a 12 hour day most days of the week and only get a couple of hours to check and work on the zone early evenings. I am also looking at buying a house which some of you know is not an easy task. I have a very busy life and it's currently quite stressful. When I come on the zone in the evenings I see posts from people which have been blatantly put in the wrong sections or are clearly disobeying the rules and this winds me up. I should probably keep my feelings to myself but I am one to speak my mind.

If it has appeared that I'm treating members like "lower class citizens" then please believe me, this is certainly NOT the case. I am greatful for each and every member we have on this site and without the members we wouldn't be here.

You must remember that by blocking people with under 100 posts from viewing the classifieds, you are effectively removing a large portion of the potential buyers. Ergo,even longtime trusted users may experience difficulties selling parts or cars.

I have the system fix ready to implement but am thinking of holding off because I realise that some people come on here to look for a new E30 and this could be the place that they find one. Similarly, someone might have sold their E30 and have some nice parts that they could offer to zoners.

However, I have also seen a fair share of "off topic" posts that have produced copious volumes of useful and informative discussion. The majority of subscribers have several areas of expertise within life, and I feel that restricting discussion purely to matters pertaining to e30's is narrowminded.

This is the reason we have a Pub Talk section, of course we don't talk purely E30's here and that is of course permitted but only in the relevant sections.

The increase threat of someone getting funny over posts has caused me to not post my thoughts on many occasions, not the way it should be.
most of the people i have encountered on the site have been very helpfull and polite. its just the occasional one that ruins it (and they are the ones we remember!).

All in all this is a very good site, lets not let that slip form our minds.

Please don't feel that you have to with hold your opinions for fear of being shot down, this will only happen if you're doing wrong

Having read a previous locked thread re the same subject I was a little shocked to read the following :

It's those sort of posts that start to annoy the mods and admin so best to keep them to yourself or word them a little better.

I still stand by my statement but was having a bad day so I should have worded it differently, I apologise for that!

Being a 'below-100' poster, I may have no right to query anything here, but why not impose the 100+ restriction only if you want to sell. That allows the real supporters to reach their target audience and allows relative newcomers to get a decent E30, rather than some of the crap on the trader and fleabay.

As I have already said, the forum software will not allow this.

Ant you say that the decision was taking knowing it will upset a few people, but reading the other thread, it's not just a few people that are upset, it's the majority of the Zone and that's the worrying thing.

A handful of people voicing their opinions is not the majority of almost 8,000 members.

I think it is fair to say that the mods don't get enough recognition for what they do, it is unfortunate that they only get 'attention' when things aren't right.

On that note I'd like to express my thanks to all mods.....but please remember that the Zone is nothing without the Zoners AND the Mods.

I have yet to see a reply to the email notifications related numerous threads.

This is because we don't currently have anyone who can look into the problem. We are hoping to get the issue resolved but it may take a little time. It's only a minor glitch at the moment so isn't priority but we will get it fixed.

In the cold light of day, I have had time to reflect on matters and feel that there has been a lack of give and take all round. Putting myself in Adam's shoes, well the guy has a difficult task to keep everybody happy and I do not envy his situation at all.

Yes I feel that something had to be done in the classified sections as it was turning into a mess with people posting stuff up for sale and countless pointless remarks being made or totally unconnected posts taking the original thread way off line. If it was to be left to the mods to play policeman here with a bit of a zero tolerance policy, then in my opinion it would only have led to anarchy or some sort up uprising moaning about the mods being too heavy handed.

OK so it is a disadvantage to the newbies not being able to view the classifieds but let's give it a go and see how things work. If there is a technical problem that cannot allow people with less than 100 posts to view items but not post then so be it. If a solution exists, then perhaps that needs to be explored.

I think we are just going around in circles now. Arguing about arguing. We are all "members" of this forum and in my opinion that does not automatically give us a right to plan the running of it. yes we can have our say when the actions of someone else affect our enjoyment of the forum but I think when the red mist clears, there will be no real harm done here and we will all get back to talking about what bought us all together on this forum to start with, E30s!

Sorry to sound painfully liberal here but I think when you take a step back from it all, it's all a bit pathetic really. Adam lost his blob after coming under pressure from all and sundry, all and sundry, myself included, were a bit peeved at the methods of enforcement and the way this has been communicated.

Ive only got 65 posts, yet ive been reading for a year and taking active part in threads for about 6months. it takes a surprising amount of time to rack up posts unless you know the answer to everyones questions or post alot of crap. i really dont want to have to start posting rubbish just to reach 100 so i can buy stuff for my car

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. There's a lot of pressure to trying to run this place whilst juggling so many other important things in life at the same time. I definately need help with tasks and new blood is being looked into at present. I could definately do with support of people and them trying to understand my position rather than attacking my ideas.

That was me, a prime example of a member with one post trying to sell a car that isn't even a BMW. That's just taking the piss out of this forum.

I think the big problem with forums is that its very easy to come across the wrong way or even cause offence without actually meaning to.....and in most cases i think this is very much the case.

Let hope this thread is a step forward to making the e30zone a better place?

I remember about 2 years ago when i bought my car, the guy who sold it to me got slated in the For Sale section. I also got slated and nearly didn't come back again so this is not something that's just started. It's been going on here for years. Granted it's got a little out of hand lately and we all agree that something should be done about it. Whilst i agree that some decisions should be taken by the mods, i think anything that drastically changes the Zone should be taken by majority openion and that's something that many of the old Zoners feel has not been done lately.

Adam you're saying a handful of zoners voicing their disapproval is not the majority of the zone, but that's cause the majority of the zone hasn't said anything. My point was based on the people who have bothered to reply. Good or bad in your eyes, people have the right to voice their concerns and good leaders are the ones that listen to the people and roll with the majority view (Not that i'm here to be led by anyone) I cant even be bothered to carry on with this anymore cause you're apologizing to some and sticking to your attitude with others. I dont sell anything on the zone or buy anything either cause i have nothing to sell or buy. I come here cause i can chat, share a joke with like minded enthusiasts and get help as well as help when i can and that's the spirit that's kept the zone going and made it the force that it is today. You'd do well to remember that mate.

Hi, I have wanted to post on this subject for a few days, but as a new member I felt that I might be considered irrelevant, but here goes....

Adam, (or Adolf as I thought! :~) ) it takes guts to admit a mistake, but you have done so, and I for one think that is commendable, and that has changed my opinion of you.

I only joined the forum because I wanted to buy an E30. I have been lucky enough to get one if all goes according to plan tomorrow! (Glasgow to Cardiff!). The 100 post rule would have stuffed me, but that does not look like happening now, so no comments regarding that (WooHoo! was the cry!).

What I would suggest is making the forum visible ( just able to read, not post) to non members. I am a member of several car & bike forums, and this is the usual format. That way there would be a genuine figure for the number of members, without including all the folks who come on register, find out it's not what they were wanting/expecting, have a look and never post or look again.
It would also (imho) stop a number of the snide replies to posts, I mean, who is going to register just to flame a seller about their item? chances are not many.

This is an excellent forum, with friendly members giving valuable info to others, hopefully in the future I'll be able to contribute something.

I think the air has been cleared considerably and a lessons learned by all on the Zone. Ben I think we should give breathing space and let everyone have a chance to find the way forward.

Its one heck of a task to run the Zone and as has been said perhaps changes have not been implemented in the best possible manner. However, mistakes (we all make them) have been admitted and personally feel that we can now move forward.

Lets all try and support each other for the benefit of each other and the Zone. If we wanna bitch then lets continue to do it in a constructive manner a la forum.

If something really strongly is felt about a subject or topic it may be possible to run a poll which would allow everybody a fair shout.

Lets move forward and maintain the excellence of the Zone !!!!!!!!!

Its nice to know that this happen's elsewhere, as a former mod of a HUGE MMPORG forum, i can understand where admin/mods are coming from, it does not matter what you do, you can never please everyone, you will always upset the "regulars". people getting ripped off and people differing on opinions is a fact of life as we all know. So why is this even mentioned? as no matter what is brought in it will still happen.

But going with what the majority want does mattter. Now yes there are 8000 members but alot of people who have voiced there concerns are people who as they say do not even post. So now in my mind we have had our regulars (most of them) and folks who mainly read speaking up.

To me this means alot of peeps are upset and they are not happy

He's an Irish car sales man, since I've had this sport on e-bay, I've had nothing but phone calls from Irish guys asking about the car, and nearly every single person I spoke to seemed to know him, and said similar to what you just said.

I'm just waiting a while to see what things are like when everything settles down. I have to admit that I have thought Adam to be a little 'grumpy' on a few posts I have seen, but I can appreciate the pressure of his current responsibilities... God knows we all get a tad bit stressed when things get on top of you. I have been in that situation many times just recently, resulting in the loss of both of my E30s...! Running the Zone single handedly could prove to be too much if everyone is against him. Has anyone actually commended Adam for his time and effort...?

Everyone was quick to 'welcome' him to his new post (apart from a few), but then equally as quick to slate him as he made changes to the Zone that not everyone agreed with.

I must admit that the 100 post 'for sale posting' rule is a good idea, but to not allow the sight of the for sale section till you've posted 100 times is a little silly if it were to be carried out. A large proportion of the Zone users are well below this limit and therefore sellers would lose a number of potential purchasers. Mind you, saying that, the Zone is not Free Ads...

But, you have to think about it in a different light. If you were to come on here as a 'newbie', you would take the changes and think nothing of it as that's all you've been used to. 100 posts to see the for sale section... that's fine. Trouble is, we've all been on here so long that we feel we have the right to have a say in how the Zone is run and then 'help' make decisions that aren't really ours to make. Remember we're only 'users' and we've all gained hell of a lot of knowledge and made brilliant friends while doing so.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the Zone. Afterall, is it really THAT important? Will it make your life a living hell...?

Again, I thought not.

Not really got much to say, ive only just seen this thread, and dont know of any others.

From what i can see, the rule that is possibly going to be implemented about the 100 posts thing....sucks. Ive got freinds that have E30s and have signed up (through my tip off) to sell and buy bits, and some have since then stayed to become members.


Imagen...you buy/want to buy a new car, and find the 'UK's Largest E30 Community' Only to find out that they cant be part of it..... thats a bit gay tbh,

Ive stopped comming on the Zone a lot latly, theres constantly new people,which although a good thing make me feel like times are moving too quickly, i occasionally stop to help/ask technical stuff, but i do do any major posting anymore, not sure why, but it seems to be the same with a few ppl i know on here

Keep posting Sam, I've no idea why peeps feel they cant post anymore without getting flamed, the mods are on site to ensure that does not happen, we are appointing some new mods ASAP so the situation WILL improve for all concerned.

well what can i say that hasnt already been said in this thread
not a lot really

the one thing that has wound me up recently is the way some mods are dealing with things

1 to mention is Adam
lately some of your posts have been very rude and condescending
(now by no means is this a dig at you mate because that is just not my style)
and i appreciate that you have appologised in this thread already
i admire if a person that can stand up and appologise in such a way
that you did especially with the wolves on your back so to speak

its obvious you have had stressfull times because thankfully i came from the old zone
and i can honestly say you were not like this in any respect "back in the day" (listen to me sounding like an old war vet).

but i do think with all what is going on lately
the shock of the zone changing hands
the Lizzie thing
the email notification probs
and the sales thread thing
i think people have got a little shaken up
as to what is gonna happen to the zone
because after all it may belong to an individual
but 90% of the frequent users have put something into "the zone"
so its not just treated like another website
its like a little piece of themselves

for which i dont blame them really because I like a lot of others
use this place loads if not for buying and selling
for learning new things about these cars we love soooo much

i think this is the lowest time in the zones existence
and the way i see it is things will get better

there is not much else i have to say really
other than

mods keep up the hard work i am sure it is appreciated
if we were in a pub i'd buy you all a pint and a pie

I wonder if one of the new mods will take up my idea re E30Zone caps and fleese as Adam only wants merchandise to be sold via the zone team.
