For some silly reason, a family members mint e39 M5 is being taken off the road for a bit.

I've had mixed suggestions regarding whether it should be started occasionally or left.

Anyone got an recommendations on whats should be done?

All it would be is started, reversed out of shed and back in again. Not sure for how long but I'd say a few months

No point starting it unless your going to give it a good run up to temperature on the road.

Day insurance isn't too expensive, is it? Just convince them they need to let you take it for a good run every now and again! ;)

I'd consider hooking up a smart charger to it whilst it's laid up,make sure the handbrake is left off so it doesn't seize on and chock the wheels(unless your removing them).

I'd also move the brake pads back off he disk a bit.

Every time I leave a car standing for a while, I find the brakes to be the bit that suffers most apart from the battery. The battery is easily dealt with but disk corrosion can get pretty nasty and doesn't seem to do your pads any good if you try to clean it up just by driving.
Some WD40 might help, but I'm sure there's something better that professionals use.

Is the car going to be lifted off the ground?
would suggest sillica gel products placed inside the car, use some tupparware containers to hold them if loose.

not my add btw.

I would be asking questions about oil comsumption if you do get tempted with it.
