errr from memory don't you hold the outside, put the key in and turn it through 90 degrees, then the whole top bit comes off?

The best way to use standard locking nuts is to get a powerful drill and drill the bloody things off and replace them with decent ones, when your broke down on the side of the M5,in the rain, with a blown out tyre, you'll understand why I suggested this if you don't change them for decent ones!

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...

Put the key in and turn it through 90 degrees, and pull damn hard, you may need to wiggle it a bit to get them off. The key latches onto the top of the locking nut hence you can pull the nut off with the key.
When you do eventually manage to get the useless thing off chuck the locking part away, as Jesus said, they are bloody useless!. But i guess if we can't get them off with the key then the thieving scum bags will not get them off in a hurry either !
