Yep!
Bought for £5500 with 43000 miles and a knocking bottom end in feb '09. The very day i sold the Red S30E30.
I rebuilt the engine, put a few thousand miles on it then served it to Jason Barker (trader for just shy of £12k. I made 4 bags profit and got to smoke about in it for a few months.
Nice tickle that was!

thats an understatement. It sounded more like it had rods hanging through the side of the engine blockbss325i wrote:a knocking bottom end

The crank damage! It span no 5 big end and scored the crank and mullered the rod!

Recognise the deviants?

During strip down at Simon 13's Alpina abode!

Custom pistons

Nice head!

Going back in

Gaydon '09

When i sold it

Funny you should say that! Today i replaced the engine in an R56 Mini Cooper which had spat a rod and put a couple of holes on the block, one either side!billgatese30 wrote:thats an understatement. Was this the one that had a stupidly expensive head gasket?

Just over £300 +vat for the Gasket!
I had to buy one conrod for it as will which was about £200
and other ones had to be weighed to 2 decimal places then the weight emailed to Buchloe via Bracknell so they could send the right one!
These donks, like all Alpina donks are hand built to finer tolerances. The shell colours were different across each journal as well!

Two n half bags to put it right?
Expensive crank then.
Hope my B3 engine doesn't go that way.
I have heard the 3.4 B3S engine is a little more fragile than the 3.3

headgaskets seem to be the most common big problem. One guy in the pina register forum has had his B3S touring from new and had the head gasket go twice. But the car has covered 180,000 miles plus. Seems to be around the 100k mark for them

I would love a coupe like that ( no much of a softtop fan ).
I bet it had a really nice sound when you gave it the beans.

It owed me just under £8k but the £2500 on to of the purchase price wasn't all for the repair.Ali-bumble wrote:Two n half bags to put it right?

The Alternator packed up which was nearly £300, replaced the control arm bushes for £100, i had to tax it at £100 and the insurance as expensive as well because at the time due to me having a DR10 on my licence.
The repair to the engine was about £1800 for the parts and machining costs. It all ads up when you take into account the £300 head gasket, £200 conrod, oil pump, and every single seal and gasket.
Had the crank reground instead of a new one as it wasn't to bad so i got away with +.25 grind and new oversize shells.
A new crank would have been nearly £2000!!

I've been thinking the next one for me is a lhd manual b3s touring. Save the aggro of converting a right hooker to manual I think
