For those in the dark, my mighty M42 has finally given up the ghost and decided to overheat on a semi-permanent basis. At best a head/profile gasket at worst a cracked head. I had a good run at 130K trouble free miles.

Pete - it was totally fine until the return leg - I just stopped every hour and refilled to get home.

The question now is, new head, new M42 or add 2 Cylinders.

I picked up a very cheap 318iS E36 last year with this issue. You'd fill the cooling system (I removed the stat) and it would start of 3 pots with a good puff of steam from the Zorst. It would go for about 10 miles quite okay, heater on hot - and when it went cold, you knew it needed water. Pull over, add coolant and it would fire up again on 3 with a superb steam display before latching onto 4 again - and no more steam. I did a 6 mile stretch down the A1 at 70 and it was okay but just off it, it needed more.

Four cracks in the head on cyls 2 and 3, exhaust valve seat to the waterway. I still have it as a trophy.

Nice! I think the head goes due to gasket failure on these, but that's def where to check, where it's got the big slotted hole in the head but only little ones in the gasket on cyl 2 . In the ones I've seen (mainly on t'internet) you can see where the gasket has failed, the subsequent nastiness the engine's been put through then seems to kill the head.

That's exactly what happened on mine except I could do a hundred miles until refill time.

I removed the throttle heater plate some time ago and plugged the coolant port that feeds it - do you think this was a cause? Was done a while ago tho...

No, that wouldn't cause it. M42 heads cracking are mostly caused by overheating and insufficient coolant as opposed to a design fault. My Compact for example came to me with a cracked head (Cyls 2 and 3, four cracks - identical failure to the iS Coupe head) and it had been bodged up with K Seal or some other evil muck. The reason it was overheating was a missing fan shroud - when driving, there's air going through the rad but in traffic there isn't. The shroud is there because the fan is too far away from the rad and without it, the fan cannot get any heat from the rad to engage the clutch.............so it just overheats. E36 gauges are also 'buffered' meaning that even though the needle is in the centre, it can still be very close to boiling. By the time the needle starts to move up to 3/4 and the red, it's already boiling its tits off.

When you get two cracks on one cylinder, the area of cylinder head between the cracks relaxes its nip on the head gasket - the two I've done showed distinct blow by on the gasket in this area.

The company mentioned ^^^^^ sound like a right shower.

Sounds like the temp gauges are buffered the wrong way.

I guess Cooks Ferry are a bit slapdash these days - they didn't use to be but the guy there who knows his stuff is quite hands off now. They had the head off an E46 M3 the other day so they know what they're doing but it's all in the details I with these older cars now.

Like I said, 130K isn;t bad - I don;t even know if it had the Profile Gasket recall...

Anyway - E36 Sport Tourings - where are they all!

Sorry but just because the head is off of something, does not mean they are competant!

The more knowledgeable guy may know his stuff but if he employs incompetent staff then he is just as bad as they are.

I understand a VOSA teleportal is used whereby the vehicle being tested is examined via satellite and the certificate arrives via Royal Mail.

On coolant plate, ideally you shouldn't blank it off but bypass it imo dude, run a hose direct from the plastic port in the block up to the one in the cyl head just bypassing running around the heater plates. It prob shouldn't make much odds as it's the one at the back of the head that does the work, but still I wouldn't want to mess with how the thing was designed and so would keep that passage of flow open.
what's with cook's ferry? you got the head off yet? Jog on, let's see how badly you've toasted it!

Cooks Ferry did a complete timing case /gear renewal for me and returned the car minus ANY coolant and also didn't remove the old Tstat gasket when fitting the new one - so it was seated with 2 gaskets and not sealing properly.

I didn't use the car for months but when I did all these issues came about - so yes it could be their fault but how do you go back to them now. I guess I was due a headache after 13 years and 130K.

I'm parking it up till it's sunny then either Pacer will have a look if he can or I will boogie on it - can't do any worse lol.

ah def sounds like they f**ked it, not cool. Though could mean head's ok if you haven't overheated it too much.

Head off is only an hr or two's work on these:
1) Remove the two inlet pieces and water hose (just unbolt stuff and leave it cast aside, no need to completely remove or disconnect fuel lines etc)
2) Remove valve cover
3) Remove exhaust (just unbolt and leave it cast aside, no need to completely remove)
4) remove top timing case and t stat housing
5) Put engine in TDC, remove cam pulleys
6) Unbolt head

If you want to unbolt everything I'll gladly swing by and remove/inspect/refit the head.
*If* the head's good, for a couple of hours work could have her back on the road with shiny new HG/profile gasket in there. If you're leaving her parked up, take the plugs out, turn the engine a bit and oil the bores to stop the coolant in there destroying them.

Definately not profile gasket , there is coolant getting into the cylinders. It's missing when started after being left for a while. I will pull the plugs later if I get a chance and crank it . To be honest, I am expecting the head to be cracked :(
