I know both cars have the same bhp output.....but a few people now have told me that the M Tech 1 is actually quicker and accelerates harder than the later M Tech 2....
If this is the case then why is this?
Wanted to know this for a while now!!
Have to say my current M Tech 1 feels alot quicker than my old M Tech 2....probably something to do with the full stainless and 6 branch manifold fitted!
Stu
Which is quicker in standard form? M Tech 1 or M Tech 2??

a good facelift engine will go just aswell as an early one. It's the fact that the early engine has slightly higher compression which makes them feel faster sometimes imo
this theory has partly come about because of recent rolling road tests we have had in the past 2 years, and alot more early cars have still made the factory power claims and the later cars have not

it's all hearsay but I've seen a few posts where it is mooted that the pre-facelift 325s actually all made the 171bhp, but with all the revisions of the facelift BMW actually lost a few bhp, and this has been proved on the dyno?
Obviously BMW would never have said as such at the time.

Wheel arches, inner sills, jacking points, inner flitches etc all weigh lots and since most early sports are missing these bits they are much lighter and as a result faster !.
Later cars are now disolving at an alarming rate and soon they will both be neck and neck !

Re: dyno figures, I would've thought the state of the engine (well serviced, good oils / parts, etc.) and things like exhaust (some later cars have the dreaded cat
), fuel (95RON vs 98RON) etc. would make more difference to the dyno results than pre/post facelift. Especially with older cars.
But the dyno doesn't tell all the story, e.g. earlier cars had a 3.64 diff and later cars 3.91 so the later cars should accelerate better... if all other things equal.
Maybe someone may have so old road tests (not BMW official figures) for these cars when they were new? In saying that, Mtech1's may very well have been run of 4-star petrol to get the best out of them (remember that stuff anyone?)

At both of the Dyno days at Bexleys the early ones gave a fair bit more power.
All made over 170 bhp, some 175/176. The late ones - max BHP is usually around the 165 mark.
